Dog-fear Day!
Jun. 30th, 2010 04:24 pmThe 4th of July is coming up in a few days. I need to find somewhere to hide with the dogs so they are minimally traumatized. I give them ear-plugs and while this helps R0ndo (he's cool when the booms are muffled), Apache will still be a furry package of fear. She doesn't even like the little "pop" that the speakers make when the computer is turned off (something about square waves, I guess).
Any suggestions within driving range* of Los Angeles appreciated!
*Let's say that reasonable driving range is a couple of hours-- or I'd seriously consider Canada...

Date: 2010-07-01 01:08 am (UTC)I'm lucky that my dogs actually enjoy the fireworks, but I'm not sure what to expect from my temporary border collie, Pilot.

Date: 2010-07-02 07:57 am (UTC)Fortunately, Apache doesn't freak out, but she does sadly skulk away and hide under things. As noted in a previous post, I'm feeling particularly mother-hen-ish and want to prevent even the tiniest trauma to them. I'll probably just end up staying at home and closing all the windows and making sure the idiot neighbor-teens don't set the world on fire.

Date: 2010-07-02 04:32 am (UTC)I'm stuck at home with Luck the basket case; hopefully a long hard run and some melatonin will keep him under control. I'll be interested in how young Rooster-me-lad handles his first Fourth. One of the very first things I did with him as a puppy, after the furcon, was take him to a shooting range. :D

Date: 2010-07-02 08:07 am (UTC)Re: Rooster-- as you probably already know, they'll often look to you to see how they should react. Happy-voice and treats galore do wonders. I may also watch some Animal Planet shows I've got on Tivo-- the dogs find the animals sounds very distracting! (*bark-bark!*)
