I want to get away from all the fireworks and idiots blowing thing up on the 4th. Ideally, I would spend a day or so with the dogs and *no* fireworks...and the only place without fireworks on that day appears to be...Canada.

While I'd LOVE to spend a day or ten in Vancouver hiking and hanging out, it's a little impractical for a day that's only three days away. Google has been more than useless: I'm surprised-- I thought for sure there would be others who want a silent, firework-less place. I guess this is what RV's and remote locations are made for (but I'd fear miscreants and zombies, so still stressful).

Anyone out there have practical destinations within a hundred miles of L.A. Or have mad Google skilz that can find a search combination that will help me find a place? The second best "solution" so far (after Canada) is to find a massively high-fire-danger area.

Forested park area. Trees make fire danger and reduced firework visibility. Being a park limits residents who set them off independently. Angeles National Forest may work. You may also try some of the snow-less ski resorts.

Do the dogs get stressed because of the fireworks? Have you tried a thundershirt?

I'm actually curious to see if Tavi is disturbed by the fireworks this year; she's VERY sound-sensitive.

When I read the post title, I thought (admittedly with tongue-in-cheek) of Vancouver - but you laready saw that coming. I would recommend Angeles National Forest (if I remember corectly, a few years ago they actually stopped people at a checkpoint to confirm no fireworks), but while everyone is made aware of the ban, there will certainly be parties willing to violate it once the sun goes down. Tahunga canyon comes to mind as a place in particular to avoid.

Yosemite Valley is outside your 100-mile- limit, but it and Kings' Canyon and Sequoia National Parks ought to be quiet, since there is not only a ban, but usually very heavy ranger presence during this holiday, as well.

The Mojave Desert is right out - too many flatlanders head up over Cajon Pass to blow up and shoot things even on non-holiday weekends in the summer. But the Coast might be a good shot, somewhere between Goleta and Los Osos (there is a state park at Los Osos, If I remember correctly; this is just south of Morro Bay) or up towards Point Sur. Perhaps the Oceano Dunes or Pismo Beach? The small town of Guadalupe, between there and Lompoc/Vandenberg AFB?

Head up to the high desert? There are some nice small towns up there which aren't likely to have much if any fireworks (and are likely high fire areas). Thinking like Randsburg (really remote) or Rosamund (less so). Both have hotels. If you want camping & hiking @ Red Rock Canyon state park.
