I'm just back from CostumeCon! I can now reveal the Top Sekrit project I've been plugging away at for the last few weeks. Meet...
MORTIMER the Warg!

I'd had an idea for a skit that I've been dying to do for years...and this year's CostumeCon was the perfect opportunity: semi-local con (driving distance), creative partner for other character (yay, Lynette!) and time (year off from AX). If I can clip out our skit, I'll Youtube it.
He was christened "Mortimer" when Lynette first saw him. She had done an effing-amazing job on her orc costume and I felt she deserved to name him, despite the ignoble nature of his title. I didn't want to eat up too much of her time on a fun project (three boys, farm, husband, a cornmaze, plus writing and costuming career), so I'd told her I just needed an orc costume for the warg to play off of: a simple oatmeal-and-latex level costume would be fine. Then she does this piece of work. Guh+WOW! This is a completely scratch-built orc!
We got totally crushed by the competition in the presentation awards (ie, zippo!), but we got best craftsmanship in the Master category! Woo! Congrats to
bladespark and
hoshikage for their huge wins in both craftsmanship AND presentation! Well-deserved and earned!
An Orc and his Warg:

Warg protocol is pretty simple:

Nothing but a big ham...but the LAdies love it!

Just curious... Did you use the same "glossy" technique on the body you used on the manticore's wings?
BTW, are you going to EF this year?

Date: 2008-04-30 03:36 pm (UTC)Actually, he's well-vented: the wounds are also mesh-vents, plus he can act like a giant bellows if I need more air. I put every trick I know about rubber monsters, puppets and pod-suits into him!
Eurofurence is a high probability, though I haven't made my air reservation yet (I do have a membership!). Ticket prices are so screwy now.

Date: 2008-04-29 05:45 pm (UTC)You totally deserved some sort of performance award, but you certainly more than earned the workmanship one, that is really amazing.

Date: 2008-04-30 04:09 pm (UTC)Can't wait to find out. You should start a pool on you LJ to see who guesses most closely! Roz is guessing Lab and Shepherd; since she took that obvious one, I'm taking Corgi-Collie.

Date: 2008-04-30 04:17 pm (UTC)Yup-- almost all foam rubber. Pretty much Japanese monster-style.
