Mortimer!

I'm just back from CostumeCon! I can now reveal the Top Sekrit project I've been plugging away at for the last few weeks. Meet...

MORTIMER the Warg!

wargsit

I'd had an idea for a skit that I've been dying to do for years...and this year's CostumeCon was the perfect opportunity: semi-local con (driving distance), creative partner for other character (yay, Lynette!) and time (year off from AX). If I can clip out our skit, I'll Youtube it.

He was christened "Mortimer" when Lynette first saw him. She had done an effing-amazing job on her orc costume and I felt she deserved to name him, despite the ignoble nature of his title. I didn't want to eat up too much of her time on a fun project (three boys, farm, husband, a cornmaze, plus writing and costuming career), so I'd told her I just needed an orc costume for the warg to play off of: a simple oatmeal-and-latex level costume would be fine. Then she does this piece of work. Guh+WOW! This is a completely scratch-built orc!

We got totally crushed by the competition in the presentation awards (ie, zippo!), but we got best craftsmanship in the Master category! Woo! Congrats to [livejournal.com profile] bladespark and [livejournal.com profile] hoshikage for their huge wins in both craftsmanship AND presentation! Well-deserved and earned!

An Orc and his Warg:

Warg protocol is pretty simple:

Nothing but a big ham...but the LAdies love it!

I was TRUELY impressed by this Quad suit... he was SOOO Cute, yet disturbing at the same time!!

I wanted to hug him :)

"Cute, yet disturbing" describes Mortimer perfectly!

[identity profile] aeto.livejournal.com 2008-04-29 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Beautiful suit, as usual. Frysco mentioned to me you had something new, and when I went looking through pics, I knew that one had to be you! Oh! I see... He has a saddle; I'd not seen that in the other pics I found. Lynette's Orc is just amazing as well; I'd not seen that until now. I look it and can't decide what's body paint and what's prosthetic.

(Edit: And is that as hot as it looks like it would be? :> )

Just curious... Did you use the same "glossy" technique on the body you used on the manticore's wings?

BTW, are you going to EF this year?

He was my big personal project for the year. It's a skit I've been wanting to do for six or seven years and things finally came together in -just- the right way to make it happen!

Actually, he's well-vented: the wounds are also mesh-vents, plus he can act like a giant bellows if I need more air. I put every trick I know about rubber monsters, puppets and pod-suits into him!

Eurofurence is a high probability, though I haven't made my air reservation yet (I do have a membership!). Ticket prices are so screwy now.

Just.. wow.. *drools*

Amazing work!

[identity profile] furtech.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! Lotsa people helped make him happen (see subsequent post).

Mortimer is SO CUTE. I never got a really good look from the front when you had the whole thing on! He's adorable! Richard got a really awesome photo, btw - not sure if you got to see it or not, but definitely check on the website if you didn't end up going by his table. :)

[identity profile] furtech.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Sank you! I love Richard's shots! Al got a lot of good ones, too! And I can't wait for [livejournal.com profile] burmeciam_storm's shots!

[identity profile] renniefox.livejournal.com 2008-04-29 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
100% made of awesome!

[identity profile] spunkywulf.livejournal.com 2008-04-29 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my God! Finally! I've been DYING to see him!!!! He came out GREAT! :D

[identity profile] furtech.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank yew!! I'm so happy you like him! Your art was a HUGE help and I think I managed to capture your goofy-warg critter's personality. People said that his expression was everything, and that's thanks to you and your beady-eyed wargs! I wasn't sure how you felt about the art being posted, so I put it behind a cut on the next post. If you don't mind, I'll take the cut off!

[identity profile] bladespark.livejournal.com 2008-04-29 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Awesomeness!

You totally deserved some sort of performance award, but you certainly more than earned the workmanship one, that is really amazing.

[identity profile] burmecian-storm.livejournal.com 2008-04-29 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Greetings from the fellow fursuiter you met backstage at the masquerade! It was a pleasure meeting you! You and Lance both blew me away with your quad suits. *_*

New material type. *takes notes*
So NOW you can make Blue Eyes White Dragon right? >.>
I personally like "EAT".

If you want me to upload to my youtube account (since it has all your other escapades), just send me the file.

[identity profile] furtech.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the help getting our skit online! And sure-- life-size Blue Eyes White Dragon: no prob! As long as you handle transportation...

[identity profile] mognetcentral.livejournal.com 2008-04-29 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Mort is my favorite <3

I posted a few on my LJ, but Lionel's got some pics of you on Flickr, this one plus the 4 following...

Thanks for the puppy-icon! And the link to Lionel's pics! And it was great to see you-- even if I did miss the Victorian Undies! *sigh*

[identity profile] lordgloria.livejournal.com 2008-04-29 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You horribly clever peoples, you! Awesome!!

[identity profile] furtech.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Clever, yet goofy. See you at Cali!

Your pictures, especially the "formal" one with Lynn standing behind you, are one of the most popular ones I have sold on the table. She did a great job, and did you, master costumer.

[identity profile] furtech.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah-- they look great! Thanks for taking so many! I'm embarrassed at the kudos I'm getting vs Lynette: *she's* the master-costumer, I'm her lowly apprentice. When I saw pics of her costume-in-progress, I was just blown away.

Wow!

Very cool.

You rock!

Mortimer warfs at you!

realy cool and impressive how you got the body proportions!

and like the head/face, because its have a living look in the eyes ^.^

[identity profile] furtech.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
My doofy, beady-eyed warg-- thanks!

[identity profile] burmecian-storm.livejournal.com 2008-04-29 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
You, my good friend, continue to astound and amaze me...

[identity profile] furtech.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! And thanks again for the hilarious photoshoot!

[identity profile] auryanne.livejournal.com 2008-04-29 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahhh I saw him on the Costume Con site! That's really cool. I loved the Gamera too, is that a friend of yours?

Also I mailed Banjo's test out today :)

[identity profile] furtech.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
The Gamera is one of Mr. Dinosaur's creations: he's a *master* of soft-sculpture monster creation! He also did the red blob-eyeball monster seen at cons and a whole slew of Japanese giant monsters (Mothra was adorable on his kidlet!)

Can't wait to find out. You should start a pool on you LJ to see who guesses most closely! Roz is guessing Lab and Shepherd; since she took that obvious one, I'm taking Corgi-Collie.

[identity profile] skiefire.livejournal.com 2008-04-29 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Phenomenal, as always

Though it looks like its probably one heck of a sweaty beast to wear.

[identity profile] furtech.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
He wasn't that bad to wear, but moving him is work (because of his constuction), so I really work up a sweat if I have to move any distance.

[identity profile] wyoon.livejournal.com 2008-04-29 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
WOW...I didn't realized the size of that beast till he had someone standing by him.

[identity profile] furtech.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yah-- that's why I had to wait for a local-ish con to get him to. He'd be difficult to get any where out of state!

[identity profile] sailortweek.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Looks so HUGGABLE! *LOL* Amazing work as always, friend! ^_^

Thank you-- I wish I had more time to be social at the con. Between finishing-madness and post masq burnout, I was flatlined.

[identity profile] crocuta.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Awesome!! :D
Congratulations too! Wow now I wish I would have dropped by CC after work to check it out!

[identity profile] furtech.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I wish you could'a seen him! Not exactly a hyena, but hyena-ish enough. And thanks for your help with the audio!

[identity profile] albrecht-fur.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
From the first shot it looks like he's a static model, still excellent but not overly exciting. Then when you show him moving in the later shots I realised what he was :P
Great job :) I'm assuming he's foam rubber (or something similar) by looking at him?

[identity profile] furtech.livejournal.com 2008-04-30 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of the engineering and design went into his movement and all the things he needed to do for the sketch. I was happy to see how floppy and puppyish he looked when he bounced around.

Yup-- almost all foam rubber. Pretty much Japanese monster-style.

[identity profile] monoyasha.livejournal.com 2008-05-01 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Zomg!! that turned out spectacular!! I cant even describe how amazed i am with the overall effect from the muscles to the face/teeth to all the movement in this creature.

JUST WOW

[identity profile] tsukinobara.livejournal.com 2008-05-01 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
The pictures don't do it justice. The costume is amazing, as usual. And you really have dog mannerisms down-packed.

Here via [livejournal.com profile] ysengrin...I've only heard wonderful things about this Costume-Con piece, and I'm so glad there's video available!

Kudos. You two did an awesome job.

Hey there,

You totally rocked my sox at Costume Con!
I totally fail to see how you didn't win BIS!
I bow before your awsome talent. Your critters are just so
mind blowingly amazing. ^_^;;

Cheers!
