Wow-- pretty decent earthquake just now. Very close (by the type of shaking). I'm guessing about 4.5-ish? And epicenter around Sylmar. Still feeling some residual rumbling. Not even strong enough to toss stuff off the shelf, but certainly noticeable-- perfect "tourist quake".
EDIT: Yep! Pegged it: 4.5 NNW of Chatsworth. I got the distance right, but it was in the opposite direction, putting it around Towsley Canyon (where we hike a lot). Probably shook some boulders loose: not a great place to be during even a small tembler!

Date: 2007-08-09 03:00 pm (UTC)Typically, there are three kinds of small-quake "feels": "truck hitting side of house" (one big jolt); rolling, coming in waves (like your house is on a flatbad on a city street); shake-shake-shake like a big hand giving your house a friendly (but irresponsible) shake. This one was like the last--the notable motion lasting 1-3 seconds.
We've been having a lot of them recently-- hopefully pressure releases and not another big one.
