I got permission from the suit's owner to post some pics of the project that sent me to Indiana a few weeks ago! "Dar'Rushk" had his beta-test at MFF this year. Lynnette and I put a lot of R&D and work into him and we are *very* happy with the result. We had a terrific design to work with:
Britt Martin did the art for his design. I thought we came pretty close to the original concept both literally and figuratively.
Meet Dar'Rushk!

I'm particularly happy with the interaction between the muscles and the fur-skin: no wrinkling or buckling!
Head detail comparison
Someone told me one neat aspect of the musclesuit's design: his chest visibly rises and falls as the wearer breathes.
Side view
This is one of NFT's newer fur blends using Mohair. The effect is that the fur has texture, but is still very silky to the touch.
Rear view showing wings and scorpian tail
I'm really looking forward to seeing him in-motion at FC! I saw all the pieces, but I wasn't there for the final fitting (and I missed MFF, dammit!).
EDIT: Wow-- thanks from both of us for all the kind comments! It's stuff like this that keeps us in a freezing workshop at 2 in the morning making that extra, finishing touch before we deliver. That, and the Cartoon Network.

Date: 2006-11-28 07:41 pm (UTC)My only quibble is that the scorpion sting looks backwards to me, assuming the manticore uses it the way a scorpion does, over the head. But that's not your fault, looks like the original artist depicted it that way.
I'd really like to see it in motion!

Date: 2006-11-30 03:43 am (UTC)The first night he was out (and I say 'he' because nobody would give who the owner/wearer was ;), he seemed very tentative- walking slowly, not interacting, almost as if he were doing a slow crawl around on-stage at a masquerade... but it made it easy to get a lot of photos :)
By the end of the con, the manticore was a *lot* more active, playing off other people in the lobby and generally having a great time bringing the costume to life. It was a sight to see!
