Manticore

I got permission from the suit's owner to post some pics of the project that sent me to Indiana a few weeks ago! "Dar'Rushk" had his beta-test at MFF this year. Lynnette and I put a lot of R&D and work into him and we are *very* happy with the result. We had a terrific design to work with:
Britt Martin did the art for his design. I thought we came pretty close to the original concept both literally and figuratively.

Meet Dar'Rushk!
manticore

I'm particularly happy with the interaction between the muscles and the fur-skin: no wrinkling or buckling!

Head detail comparison

Someone told me one neat aspect of the musclesuit's design: his chest visibly rises and falls as the wearer breathes.

This is one of NFT's newer fur blends using Mohair. The effect is that the fur has texture, but is still very silky to the touch.

Rear view showing wings and scorpian tail

I'm really looking forward to seeing him in-motion at FC! I saw all the pieces, but I wasn't there for the final fitting (and I missed MFF, dammit!).

EDIT: Wow-- thanks from both of us for all the kind comments! It's stuff like this that keeps us in a freezing workshop at 2 in the morning making that extra, finishing touch before we deliver. That, and the Cartoon Network.

I saw this costume walking around the lobby at MFF ... I thought it had "the mark of furtech" about it. ;)

Good work!

Oh gosh, that's a terrific monster! I'd love to see it move IRL also, the concept to actualization is perfect.

Hurruh for mythicbeasts!

Daaammmmnn! That's nice! Mane's all NFT?

Incredible work, as always. Nothing short of amazing.

Very good! I look forward to seeing it at FC.

I had a random chat with the suit owner a few days ago. He's also extremely pleased with how it turned out.

You never cease to amaze, pal. :)

*speechless with wonder* (<----- It doesn't happen often ^.^ )

[identity profile] pikacello.livejournal.com 2006-11-28 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
GAHHH OH MY GOD SO AMAZING
You are just so amazing... it looks like a real lion!!

[identity profile] penh.livejournal.com 2006-11-28 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Wowsers! In addition to the suit being just plain awesome, it's incredibly faithful to the concept art. I noticed most people are calling it amazing, so I'm going to buck the trend and call it splendiferously jaw-dropping.

That's wonderful! Another amazing Furtech production! :D

I saw this costume at MFF. It's really impressive and a neat design.

[identity profile] skiefire.livejournal.com 2006-11-28 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
As soon as I saw the suit I thought it might be one of yours. The body (especially the legs) reminded me of the Red XIII you created a few years back.

Its pretty awesome. Id love to see how my character would turn out done like that. One day maybe..

[identity profile] okojosan.livejournal.com 2006-11-28 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a fantastic piece of artwork!

My only quibble is that the scorpion sting looks backwards to me, assuming the manticore uses it the way a scorpion does, over the head. But that's not your fault, looks like the original artist depicted it that way.

I'd really like to see it in motion!

That thing is so good that it just plain hurts!

Hey, can I get this style in a size 12 ?

[identity profile] gilmorelion.livejournal.com 2006-11-29 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, you'll get it in a size 12! And guess where I'm gonna put it?
;)

I saw this at MFF. It's what one may call... PERFECT! :)
I am still looking for my jaw cause it totally fell off.

[identity profile] animecat.livejournal.com 2006-11-28 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I knew who exactly had made it when I saw him. Twas VERY impressive in person, and the wearer performed him very well. He instilled a mixture of fear and awe in me.

Though I WAS hoping it was you in the suit and we'd finally get a chance to meet.

Still, excellent work!

[identity profile] swirling-chaos.livejournal.com 2006-11-28 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Your work is so inspiring - everything you make is just so perfect in every little detail. You truly are a master artist. Thanks for sharing this.

[identity profile] diadexxus.livejournal.com 2006-11-28 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw this in person and knew INSTANTLY who built at least part of it!

Everything on that is beautiful. :)

fantastic work as always!!! I DO think he needs a bigger weapon or staff to go with it.

*stares* That is awesome. I'm super impressed with the muscle definition. I'm really looking forward to seeing him in person at FC. <3

My goodness, such a gorgeous suit! I'm impressed with how closely you stuck to the concept art. Wow!

How did you go about making the muscle suit?

[personal profile] rcking 2006-11-28 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Nice suit. I got to see it close up - the body suit has the seams hidden very well and the padding and the airbrush work mesh perfectly. It was a privilege being the Manticore's spotter.

When I saw it at the con, I wondered if you had a hand in making it.

:P

It was very impressive in person, btw.

In the immortal words of Peter Griffin, that's "Frikken Sweet!" Very nice job - I can't wait to see it in person.

[identity profile] haamel.livejournal.com 2006-11-29 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
That is just hyper studly looking. Once again, you've outdone yourself. ^_^

[identity profile] foxfeather.livejournal.com 2006-11-29 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Very nice job. Saw it in person at MFF and was impressed! I love how you do the legs and feet, awesome job.

gorgeous

[identity profile] shadowolf.livejournal.com 2006-11-30 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
That was one hella-sweet costume!

The first night he was out (and I say 'he' because nobody would give who the owner/wearer was ;), he seemed very tentative- walking slowly, not interacting, almost as if he were doing a slow crawl around on-stage at a masquerade... but it made it easy to get a lot of photos :)

By the end of the con, the manticore was a *lot* more active, playing off other people in the lobby and generally having a great time bringing the costume to life. It was a sight to see!

[identity profile] c-eagle.livejournal.com 2006-11-30 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
just look at the FLOOD of comments on this!

It truly deserves it... magnificent! :>

Right on man. I loved him! Looked great, performed great. Really nice job on preventing it from wrinkling at the joints. Overall, massively pretty ^.^
