While I wait for some goop to dry, I'll toss this question to the crowd:

What is the worst pain you ever experienced?

Mine was a scratched cornea: don't let anyone tell you there are no nerves in the eye! Writhing pain, with the added nastiness that you can't really don anything but wait until it heals (4-8 hours, typically). And there is no "comfortable" position! Closing your eyes has 'em rubbing on the lid; keep them open and the pain makes tears (salty water open wound=*aieee!*).

A close second would be when I had (unknown to me at the time) a compression fracture of my foot and a helpful salesman jammed my foot into a formal shoe. A magnificent pain that had me hallucinating, blacking out and hearing opera all in the space of a split-second.

Kidney stones. Nothing else has come close, including massive trauma from a street bike accident.

Kidney Stone. Oxycodone only brought the pain down to moaning on the bed, waiting for the stone to pass. *ouch!*

I've heard it said: "A kidney stone is the closest a man will come to knowing the childbirth pains a woman feels..."

Burned trachea and esophagus in combination with a hieatal(sp) hernia. Basically, I would get stomach acid refluxing up onto the burned tissue in my throat. doG! I'm writhing in my chair just remembering it.

Ooo I have had that! I had to go to the ER. People thought I was bulimiac because I could not swallow w/o crying.

Mine was a bad reaction to a cheap antibiotic. I was living with a chronic digestive disorder and had wasted away to 98 lbs over the course of about two years... the night before I was admitted to surgery to have part of my intestine removed, they gave me erethromycin, and it was (and has remained) the only time in my life I hurt so bad I actually wanted to die.

Ruptured abcessed appendix. That was not pleasant. I've yet to experience a kidney stone.

Also getting a potassium drip without lidocaine piggybacking it isn't fun either.

Hmm.... the worst pain I ever experienced was the time I broke two of the long finger bones inside my hand, and then managed to get a nerve caught bewteen the broken end of the bones when the tried to set it. I threw up, it hurt so badly.

(BTW, been watching your journal even though I haven't had much to say. Hope you don't mind. Hi!)

Migraine headache. I won't go into details of the symptoms except that it caused hallucinations and blackouts.

This is a particular type of weighty pain... It doesn't have the "sharp" feeling associated with something like a knife cut or (I'm assuming) a broken bone.

Oh, stitches without proper anesthetic was fun, too.

Migraines are special

Nasty head, fireflies in the eyes, nausia, and the worst part is that it doesn't stop. A bad case goes on for hours without the blessing of shock or endorphines. And you feel every second of it.

Several times I've fallen and had a brief cresendo of pain, the worst being a fall down my front stairs.
Worst pain that lasted more than a few seconds was four hours after that fall when the various muscles had some time to stiffen up around the sprains, strains, and dislocations, and I attempted to get up, had a nasty bout of shock induced nausea, then passed out.
Other worst pain has been burns. Nothing quite like a third dregree burn to make one writhe like a half-crushed worm, a horribly bright kind of pain that overrides the higher centers of the brain and turns one into a scrabbling animal trying to escape.

Trying to stand up 2 days after stopping taking all other meds in prep for being put on a new one, about 4 months into the ruptured disc hell.

Probably when I had to have my fingernail removed. I've also had some stomach cramps bad enough to make me break in a sweat.

All that pain was nothing compared to when I had the inner-ear problem that made me lose my sense of balance. I'd take a week of missing fingernails to having to go through that again.

WORST pain? I would say (get ready for tmi) menstrual cramps. It feels like giving birth at times.

I'd have to agree with Megan... I've had menstrual cramps so bad I was crying and biting myself like a trapped animal to release endorphins. >_

I guess I've lucked out in the cramps area. I've never had any that couldn't be taken care of by a couple asprin or tylenol. But I remember my old roommate in college used to get them so bad she'd be bedridden.

When I had Xrays taken for before they made a diagnosis of lyme disease. They suspected I had a muscle slip into my hip joint and that was why I was suddenly in so much pain I couldn't walk.

So I went in for xrays. I was frozen in the position of the wheelchair they'd just lifted me out of. The Xray tech decides I'm just being a weenie about not spreading my legs so they can get a good shot of my hip, so forces my legs apart so hard it bangs my knees on opposite sides of teh table.

I think they heard the howl several miles away. @#$%^&* xray tech. If the person is stuick in a fetal position to pain, don't decide they're just being a pain in the ass and force them into a new one. jackass.

Close second, foot surgery with misadministered novocaine. The podiatrist shot my leg full of novocaine twice, to the pount where I couldn't feet my entire thigh. Jackass put it in the vein going AWAY from the area he was supposed to be numbing and so I got to have surgery on an ingrown toenail with effectively no anaethic in the right place, and no feeling in most of my left side...except the stupid foot.

Unsurprising that I was very reluctant to have foot surgery for a bone spur some time later. That didn't hurt. it was mostly just nasty smelling from them using a grinding wheel on the bone. Burning boon, vibrating leg... ech.

May I have no further foot problems, EVER.

I agree with ysingrin and the others. Kidney stone was the worst evar. And I drove myself to the hospital too :)

It was so bad I couldn't stop involuntarily groaning and yelling and it STILL took the hospital people an hour to get to me. It was weird having sound coming from my mouth and no way to stop it!

They usually have to give you morphine for it, but they tried a direct numbing with something by punching a needle through my stomach and into the kidney first. It did NOTHING.

Out came the morphine for about 2-3 hours before the pain subsided. And though the pain was mitigated, I found the feeling of being pumped on Morphine to be virtually as unpleasant. Like your entire body is asleep but you are conscious. You sometimes get a taste of it when you fall asleep for a few minutes in the afternoon on the couch then wake up, only 100x worse.

Fortunately, I've managed to stay injury-free most of my life. Only times I've really hurt myself was while playing baskeball. I rolled my ankle once (sounds quite similar to what you have, actually) and wrenched a back muscle in another incident. Those were the only times things were bad enough to send me to an Rx for treatment.

Infection that made my ear drum slowly expand over a few days and burst. Horrendously painful. Then I was deaf in the ear for a week while the new one grew back. Luckily that didn't hurt. :)

since you asked..

(wow... there's some pretty ghastly stuff here.. shudders!) 8|

The most recent one I can recall was being severely sunburned on the back, and having to stand in a cold cold shower alternating solarcaine on it, for several fruitless hours, in hopes it would subside.

Since you listed a second, perhaps food poisoning I'd list as second.. you feel like you wanna die with some of that stuff...

Even when I broke my femur it wasn't quite as extreme as those two, because the body goes into partial shock.

And since [livejournal.com profile] kvogel pointed it out, I'll have to give the cumulative award to headaches of different sorts. Probably had more misery from those all added up more than anything, years ago.
ADVICE: cutting back Salt and Caffeine drastically has virtually eliminated headaches.

Woulda been nice if someone said something about that years ago.... ;P

take care!

You must be thinking 'brain' there are no pain receptors in the brain, but the eye... Surely it does!

Worst pain, huh?
Chronic back pain from when I pulled my back during excercises. It would wake me up in the middle of the night and I would tear up - the pain was so great.
