furtech: (monster!)

I watched a "Being Human" (US) marathon yesterday. When the series was announced a few years ago, I thought the premise was brilliant: a ghost, a vampire and a werewolf share an apartment. Wow. The potential! Like, a supernatural version of "The Young Ones". Celebration!

Then...the reality. OMGANGST! This was my dream show from the Evil Opposite Universe!

I watched the first episode and was immediately put-off by the whiney, unlikeable cast. There was a constant inner-struggle not to change the channel every time the ghost appeared. These days I find only Nickelodeon's "Fred" is more annoying (and he's supposed to be annoying!). And that screaming pig in the Geico commercials.

Never watched another episode until yesterday. I had been told that it gets better: the characters develop and become more likable. Since I was doing taxes and paperwork all day yesterday, this sounded like good white noise to have on the tv.

Again, OMGANGST! This was a compilation from season 2 and it's worse that it was before! Not only are the characters whiney and unlikable, but they're also reprehensible as well now! They all know the horrible consequences of their actions will be, yet they still do them: Vampire=live blood turns them into uncontrollable killers; the ghost inhabits living bodies (which is likened to spiritual rape); the werewolf is so all-about-his-problems that he's useless. Yet, they are all pals that would die for each other and so that makes them wonderful. Even if each of them has murdered (even ghosts) innocents by the bagful...they're still "Special" and deserve a chance. Only the werewolf reminds them of all the people they've killed by their own moral failings-- but that's ALL he does: nag, whine, angst.

The hypocrisy is nauseating: the Ghost want to show how sweet and deserving she is-- yet she's always shown to be narcissistic, selfish and self-serving. The Vampire wants to be "good" and moral and ethical, so he saves the orphan vampires and steals blood from the hospital he works in-- until the hospital actually notices the many units of blood that go missing every day and puts the supply under lock and key...so the loose vampires start killing little girls and regular people-- and STILL the Vampire wants to save and protect these vampires (orphan vampires are vampires whose "sire" has been killed). To make matters worse, HE starts to kill innocents to serve his own purposes. And we're still supposed to like him because -wants- to be moral and good. 30 days out of every month he's just a whiney, annoying ball of angst...spending most of that time trying to eliminate the one day he IS interesting.

New characters are introduced and-- despite their promise at the beginning--quickly turn into whiney balls of angst as well. Heaven forbid a character actually does change for the better: they'll be dead in an episode or two, just wait.

I kept watching, hoping for some sign that the series could turn interesting (or at least more werewolves), but the pile of manure I was shoveling through got shorter and shorter and it seems pretty clear now that there will be no pony for Christmas.

Ugh. SO wish it was a half-hour comedy instead! Imagine Rik Mayall as a vampire, Adrian Edmondson as a werewolf and Nigel Planer as a ghost!. Heaven!
