I had a lot of fun at the San Diego ComiCon this year. Saw a bunch of friends, got an autograph and had a non-catastrophic masquerade skit! For the photo-report, check it out HERE

Stayed once again at the Holiday Inn: I like this place. The shuttles make it easy and it's far from the bustle of the crowd. Neat ships to look at, decent food and a familiar-looking alarm clock. Roomed (at various times) with [livejournal.com profile] desertcoyote, [livejournal.com profile] iisaw and LyJo. Great to see all of them-- the meals were the best part of the con. I saw [livejournal.com profile] cooner, [livejournal.com profile] martes, M. McAdam and T.Kazalah-- as well as most of the AGSMA crew this way.

The convention was huge (as was expected-- they sold out of all memberships two weeks before the con!) but luckily the crowd control was efficient. The CCI people have done this for years and know not to skimp on this aspect: they hire plenty of professional ushers who are experienced and firm-but-fair about their jobs. As a result the crowds-- big as they were-- continued to move along.

I've decided that "Free Slaps" would be more useful at this convention. "Free hugs"-- how wimpy. Now, "Free Slaps"-- a dose of reality-- could serve a real purpose: "I'm thinking of getting that $60 French art comic I can't read," or "I want to spend my rent money on a WETA King Kong model," etc. I could have saved a lot of money on things that just don't seem so sparkly and marvelous at home as they did at the con.

Carrying said French comics in those plastic bags, it's a wonder I still have fingers. Much shopping on Friday. Terrie Wendling originals at the Stuart Ng Books booth!

Lots of great costumes, including three I knew: Lionel and his f-ing amazing Bumblebee; AD in her smack-on Zoe; Ms. Monster snacking on a small child.

I had two missions at the con: one was to find this sculpture and the other to get an autograph from Tite Kubo (creator of "Bleach"). Found the sculpture at the farthest, darkest corner of the con-- woo-hoo!

The Tite Kubo autograph was trickier...and I had up to ten people trying to get me a ticket. One of them managed to snag one, so I could finally meet him, however briefly. I suited up in Komamura, wearing both the fox-head and the helmet over that, and got in line. The air got pretty stuffy (fox head=stuffy; fox head + bucket= REALLY STUFFY). But I got the reaction I'd hoped for: both Tite and the people in the booth seemed to think the armor was nice...but when I removed the helmet and revealed the fox-head underneath, there were suitable *gasps* and even one "Sugoi!" Triple-thanks to [livejournal.com profile] waynekaa for wrangling me! And to the Girls (+Henry) of AGSMA for letting me store the costume in their room!!

Saturday was the masquerade-- more on that in the next post.

Sunday I made a quick run through the dealer's room and then fled. Wanted to get home. Rescue dogs from Gulag. Decant. Traffic home was light and trouble-free. Dogs ecstatic to be home.
