Yesterday [livejournal.com profile] martes showed me a comic she'd bought that day. "Neotopia" by Rod Espinoza is a delightful series in the spirit of Miyazaki and many of the European fantasy comics. I enjoyed his COURAGEOUS PRINCESS series and this series has the potential to be just as enjoyable. I hope I'm not being disrespectful in making a two-bit comparison, but Neotopia is like a cross between the original Star Wars movie and Miyazaki's Nausica. And the good news is that (I believe) all five issues of the second series is already out! [edit: actually, all ten issues of volumes one and two are out; the first issue of the third series may also be out now]

Note to [livejournal.com profile] okojosan: The issue she bought, Neotopia v.2.1, heavily features a group of hyena pirates! They're terrific characters: scruffy, yet charming.

And on a totally unrelated subject: Does anyone have any idea what the heck the lyrics to Springstein's "Blinded by the Light" mean?!? I thought the problem was that I couldn't make out all the words, but a check of a convenient lyric site shows me that I clearly have *no* idea what they mean!

*blinks* Hyena Pirates! yes!!

Are these comics still sold as individual issues, or are they in collected trade editions yet?

Eeee, hyena pirates! I'll definitely have to check that out! Thanks for letting me know!

As for "Blinded by the Light", it's Manfred Mann, and uh, I have no idea. I don't think I've ever seen the lyrics before now. Freaky!

During my college days I over saw three successful April Fools issues of student newspapers. I had a lot of fun (I think the mushroom cloud in the parking lot under the headline, "Parking enforcement gets tough" was the best)--but I've decided what I don't like about this holiday are NOT the people who can't tell a good joke…

…it's the idiots who don't recognize the obvious April Fool's joke in a paper or magazine or their favorite radio show and get VERY ANGRY about the whole thing. The examples that are springing to mind are NPR's bogus story a few years ago that starbucks was building a coffee bean pipeline across the continental divide--someone started organizing a protest. My, gawd!

I couldn't make out the words either, so thanks for the ref. As for what they mean, I got at least a vauge idea about most of it. To me, things like "revved up like a deuce" seems pretty obvious, especially as it sounded like "rolled up like a deuch", which doesn't.

Interestingly enough, Rod Espinosa is open to receiving e-mails and will most likely resond if you write him. ;=D) Let him know how much you enjoy the comic and encourage him to keep it going.

That's a great idea-- I think I will write him! I tried my local comic shop and they never really ordered any. Must track down issues...

That's a cool book link!... I hope I remember to look for it at the next cconvention or bookstore visit.. :>

As for the Mann song... my guess is that it's either deliberately nonsensical like "MairzeeDoats" or simply a tripped out drug-induced set of lyrics... *boggle*

the meaning

The Mann lyrics appear to be simply rather oblique slang, I actually do follow it once I saw wha t it was really saying. As for "Maairzeedoats", that it simply a mangling of "Mares eat oats", which then follows - "And Does eat oats, but little Lambs love ivy".

Neotopia looks interesting, I'll have to check it out.
Thanks! :-)

Don't feel bad.
Even the semi-pro's KISSTHISGUY.COM (http://www.kissthisguy.com/real.html) don't understand the lyrics to it.
