WHO are you?
Feb. 28th, 2011 01:23 pmGeneral update post. As usual, there aren't enough hours in a day and I -still- haven't finished some older posts (mostly for my own record). Where there isn't actual work to do, I owe the dogs some kind of enrichment. Mind you, all this activity isn't all work-- just activities that are time-set or time-relevant, such as games we have tickets to and gardening/planting.
Two weekends ago I met
frysco at Gallifrey (a Dr. Who convention held in L.A.). He needed to get some fur down in the FD, so I trekked down to LAX and picked him up. Downtown L.A. was pleasantly clean and nice-smelling after some heavy rains. He got his fur and I bought a couple of yards of a luxurious mahogany fur that was very $$$. Prices were overall higher-- partly because of the weak dollar and partly because all basic materials have jumped in price.
Frysco bought me lunch in exchange for the chauffeuring: we had some very nice burgers at Islands (Roz, Karena and Tracy will remember this exact restaurant, across the street from your old work place). The only bad thing about Islands: bottomless fries. Because they have REALLY GOOD FRIES. Iron-will to resist (even then I was picking at the crunchy nibs left on the table-- I have no shame).
The Dr. Who convention was surprisingly nice. Something I've noticed about such narrowly focused conventions is the camaraderie between the guests and the attendees, and amongst the attendees themselves. Plus, they are often talking about the topic of the convention itself, as opposed to most furry or sf or comic conventions, where the conversation topics tend to be be more general and social in nature.
Highlights of the con: costumes galore. Some neat books on the spfx of Dr. Who, including a beautiful coffee-table book about the BBC special effects dept. Seeing a panel with Peter Davison (one of my favorite Doctor-actors), various companions/friends and the actor who did the voice of K-9, the robot dog. All seemed happy to be here and both baffled and delighted at all the attention.

I judge eating establishments by the type and quality of their Onion Rings - but I have to stay away from "all-you-can-eat" deals, because I'm too tempted to try. There is an "Islands" here in Roseville, along with a Cattlemen's Steakhouse, a Buca de Beppo, a P.F. Chiang's (ugh!) and a Cheesecake Factory, and a Romano's Macaroni Factory, as well - there is even a place that specializes in FONDUE. Two In-n-Outs, and (at least) two Mongolian BBQs, as well.
I swear, NOBODY cooks their own food in this place.

Date: 2011-03-01 09:48 pm (UTC)You're doomed: apparently (see above) the onion rings are to die for. There's an Islands about five minutes from the Marriot at LAX.
