Cutest Costumes at FC 2011
Cutest Costumes
Full Flickr Set

FC 2011 was particularly fun this year. I'm not really sure what, specifically, made it so enjoyable, but partly this was because there was a good balance between socializing, work (panels) and table-sitting. Plus, I was able to get together with a number of people that at other cons I only see in passing. Many nice meals, lots of terrific conversations. Plus, Hyena henchmen all weekend!

The collage above are what I think were the cutest costumes at the con. The springer was my favorite last year (edit: worn by "Feast of Dreams"-- hi, Katie! and built by Mixed Candy!); the trio of cat, dog and husky were *really* cute! (dog and husky made by "Feast of Dreams"; cat by Temperance); I loved the fierce little hyena girl.

There were also a number of new costumes at the con that were both spectacular and well-performed. The hawk's wings were very effective; I loved the Qarrezel gnoll-demon; faithful henchmen get a plug; the husky on the right impressed me with his ice skating skilz and mad dancing.

Great Costumes

There were also some spectacular new costumes: the neon-birds-of-prey rocked my world. Not sure who did them, but-- Wow! Great to look at in full light and amazing in the dark! I loved the big springer spaniel adventurer/detective! Great personality both in design and acting: he was my favorite new costume of the con this year! I also enjoyed the Dr. Borrible-esque canine: I forget their name, but the design was both unique and extremely personable-- and the costume worked perfectly with the head! (<--best partial at the con!).

My Favorites
My Favorites!

My panels went particularly well this year. Partly this is from having done them several times, partly because I was better prepared. I did one on "Advanced Head Design" that focused on how, exactly, to translate a 2-dimensional design into a 3-dimensional head. the other panel was the "Exotic Materials and How Not to Kill Yourself" panel. I got extremely positive feedback on these! This made me very happy.

The move to the convention center next year does not make me happy, but we'll see. All in all, possibly the best FC I've ever been to!

Hey, mister! It was nice to see you even if only for a quick hello & goodbye. Thanks for meeting my little wolf-friend. Her mom said she enjoyed the convention--they especially liked the masquerade and your head construction panel :)

Yes, it was quick, but long enough for a hug, so that's cool.

Your friend: yes, she is very shy, but she did a great job on her costume. She was very cute in the parade! She totally qualified to be at the "Advanced Head Panel" because she's already made her first suit, so she probably "got" what I was trying to say.

If she ever wants to talk about costuming or needs help with some aspect (construction or materials or whatever), tell her to feel free to ask, either directly through email or via you. She can (and probably should) cc you and/or her mom on those so I don't inadvertently suggest using some tool or material that she isn't ready for (heat guns, toxic glues, fiberglass, etc.). I didn't get a read on her actual age when I met her.

She's 13, if I recall correctly, but her moms are awesome and have been letting her costume and bake and whatever she wants to try since a really early age. They do supervise a bit when it seems more, uh... perilous? Heh. But thanks, I'll pass the message along!

oh man! those wild glowy birds of prey were my roommates at FC this year. They were built by ocelot who is fabulously talented. I made the big ol' spotty springer and I'm flattered by your words about him! :] I love his hat, and he went to a great performer. cheers!

Glowy Birds: was that Matt/Turbine and Crew? Gah-- such god-like eye candy, whoever it was. Plus, they really brought the dazzle to life at the dance!

You did the Springer-adventurer? *Fantastic job*!!! Proportions, design, expression: he's a very fun costume! And I totally agree about the performer-- excellent.

Oh, wait-- it's *you!* (<--you changed your LJ name and my shriveled brain didn't catch on...)

Wonderful piece of work. I'd still really like to get you to do some pieces of my dogs when you have a chance (2D). Let me know when you're open for commissions again (2D).

Date: 2011-01-21 11:51 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nesting.livejournal.com
Yeah! Glowy birds were Ocelot (red), turbine (white) and pandragon (vulture)...Oce made 'em all. they were a great crew to room with, and it was exciting to see those costumes in action. They are so surreal and animated!

Thanks so much again for your comments on Mr. Winston. He was a project I couldn't help but take on because I had been wanting to make some kind of spaniel, and the concept art/commissioner's character idea really fit the bill. He was a really fun pup to work on. It gave me another excuse to make a spotty dog, and try out some floppy ears!

Sorry I havn't gotten around to your pup portraits yet, they're gonna happen I promise!

They were there last year? I totally missed them. That's what I get for being a shut-in at a con.

The neon birds are by Amara Telgemeier. They're very neat!

Ah! I didn't know she made costumes-- I'm familiar with and love her artwork though. The birds were fantastic, in design, construction and performance. Even just sitting there taking a break they looked cool.

I liked that movie. Freaks made in 1932. I can even name all the "preformers" in it!

Yeah-- I was so surprised that it was nothing like I expected it to be-- not an exploitation/shock film, but touching at times and slighly horrific (but not in a traditional "horror" way). Love that movie.

Our little group used to refer to certain people as, "...having a really big feather," in reference to the film.

Thanks for the comments on Winston. Java did a knockout job and was great to work with. I was thrilled with how well the vest and (particularly) the hat worked with the character. I bought them on spec before receiving the suit, so I was nervous how it would work.

The character name Winston came from the fly-rod company that makes the rods I use R.L. Winston (which is actually the characters full name). He's supposed to be kind of aloof/uppity, which I'm still figuring out how to translate to performance.

Very good note about the detective deal, which I hadn't though about yet. The kind of LA Confidential/old Bogart movies style would work well with the character. Perhaps I'll have to pick up a trenchcoat for him. ;)

Oh, you definitely should have introduced yourself-- I would have gushed.

I was too busy snapping pics to actually -look- at your badge. Winston is a good name: before you mentioned the fly rod company, I thought of Churchill and cigarettes and the city. He'd make a terrific noir detective. Half the fun of costuming is accessorizing. People will look at you strangely, though, when you start shopping at the 4X-size stores.

OH YAY THE NEON BIRDDDDDS! I saw photos of them at... Anthrocon? I'm sorry I missed seeing them in person. There were some very cool costumes roaming around.

I'm also sorry I trimmed Luck's toe hair yesterday, but I JUST COULDN'T STAND IT ANY MORE. :D Anyway! Nice bumping into you!

Date: 2011-01-21 10:37 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] furtech.livejournal.com
No-no-- good on trimming the toe hair! He looked like a hippie. Now he's a nice, proper and trim border collie dog. He -is- a wonderful dog. I'd love to bring R0ndo and Apache, but they'd freak. They're much more at home in a quiet house or a field filled with cow-pats. Great to meet you and your pack!

PS: sorry to dis' Rooster: he's gorgeous, but I'm all about borders now.

"The springer was my favorite last year (by "Feast of Dreams"-- hi, Katie!); the trio of cat, dog and fox (mea culpa if I got species wrong) were *really* cute!;"

Awww, thank you so much for the kind words! It was great chatting with you!

Bridget the springer is actually not my work- she was made by LatinVixen- MixedCandy....I'm just lucky enough to own and wear her. <3 LV did a fantastic job on the suit. <3

That being said, two of the others are my work! Trixie the husky was from last year, and Leeloo the mutt dog (the little tan one) was brand new this year.

The cat was made by Temperance.

Alas, I don't know anything about the little hyena gal- but I adore the costume!

Thank you so much for the shout out! I'm glad you had such a great con (I think all in all it was a really good con for a lot of folks, I've heard a LOT of good things, and I know I had a a blast!)

Date: 2011-01-21 10:42 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] furtech.livejournal.com
Latin did a wonderful job on the Bridget! She captured the breed characteristics (my sister has a ton of springers) and made a very cute, perky costume! Probably my favorite Mixed Candy suit.

Trixie and Leeloo are adorable. And the performers accentuate the cuteness. Very nice work!

I -think- the tiny hyena is Jill0r...but I'm lousy at ID'ing costumes-- that's why I have henchmen.

Next time we'll find time for dinner or lunch or something!

heee, you managed to get a shot of my (well, not mine anymore) big ol' lion in the flickr set.

Date: 2011-01-21 10:43 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] furtech.livejournal.com
Yes! B was gushing about the lion. The musclework is great, but the face is the centerpiece: you managed to achieve one of those perfect "neutral" looks that can appear to be any number of expressions depending on what the performer is doing. Not an easy thing to accomplish.

I. LOVED. That Java hound dog/spaniel. Seriously it was one of my favorites and I am very sad I couldn't get a photo with him. Damn you fursuit parade for not "really" going through the dealer's room! I'm not sure why the eyes on Java suits are always angry though, I love her style, just not so keen on the angry eyes.

Date: 2011-01-21 10:46 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] furtech.livejournal.com
Java is a fierce creature! I guess she could always make a second set of "happy eyes" that could be laid-on. I had a costume that I did that with since it was mostly the eyelid placement that gave it different looks. Still, I like the intense look. There are plenty of poofy costumes out there.

Date: 2011-01-21 11:58 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nesting.livejournal.com
oh man you have no idea how badly I wanted to make Winston giddy and sweet lookin, I spent lots of time looking at him sans eyelids, but the concept called for aloof and better-than-thou, so here he is!
I think it's an aesthetic thing re: angry eyes, I like them, and it's something I've been trying to get the hang of. It also comes from subconscious influence from a fursuit one of my roommates has, certain traits of fursuits I see all the time rub off on me. This year I'm going to do lots of experimenting with different facial expressions in my costumes, and I can't wait to see where they go... :]

Date: 2011-01-22 03:27 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] roby-panther.livejournal.com
LOL. Giddy and sweet would have been fun too. Mahrkale cracked me up when she texted me and said "I want to hug him, but I don't know if he'll let me." ;)

From: [identity profile] roby-panther.livejournal.com
Angry eyes are actually pretty common when it comes sports mascots. It gives a lot of character, along with a confident look. Java actually toned the angry down quiet a bit for the character here, since he's not really an angry character, but aloof/stuck-up.

My character Roby is my friendly/bouncy side, so he's got the goofy grin going. I wanted this character to be different from that.

I'm really, very flattered that you enjoyed our trio! I'm the small tan dog by Shadow of Feast of Dreams, and it was literally my second time ever in a fursuit. Annnnd I loved every second of it.

You make fantastic work, and it's good to read you had time to do things other than sitting in the dealers den. :)

Thank you again for the compliment, and the photo of us is super lovely, is it yours?

Date: 2011-01-21 10:54 pm (UTC)

You guys were great! And I've already gushed at Shadow on her fantastic work. Your trio is an example of why furry fandom is getting a better and better reputation: cute, non-threatening and happy to meet-and-greet the public. Nice job!

[Actually, I had Steve helping this year, which enabled me to go AWOL much of the time. Much more fun this way-- though it can be nice to be planted in one place and have folks come by.]

The photos in the Flickr album are mine-- if you'd like full-res versions, give me an email and I'll send them out to you. Do whatever you'd like with 'em.

Thanks again for all your help, and donating your valued time and years of experience to our panels. If you ever need a cohort down in so-cal, gimme a ring and I would be more than happy to return the favour.

As for next year, lets set up airbrushing again. I think I can manage to haul stuff the measly 10miles from our shop to the hotel :)

DR. MALISON!

Date: 2011-01-22 03:14 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] malison-magic.livejournal.com
Oh dude, I am honored to be one of your faves of FC. My character is Dr. Malison. He has his own story (it's on LJ actually, and it starts here: http://malison-magic.livejournal.com/2008/12/04/) and was actually coincidentally created about 2 weeks before Dr. Horrible appeared on the internet and because the most popular mad scientist thing around... I am not whiny or "sensitive", and I do not sing. I AM A DOG. 8D He's actually based off of a lot of other inspirations like Dr. House (those eyes!), Dr. No, my old dog who was big on making srs faces, and professor membrane. XD

Would you mind if I posted that photo on my FA page? It's the only I have actually found that anyone has taken of me and it's awesome. :3

This was definitely my best convention experience I have ever had myself as well!

From: [identity profile] furtech.livejournal.com
Oh, cool! Thanks for the background! I can totally believe you pre-date Borrible-- sorry if the ref is annoying (but it's all I could think of when I saw you--I think it's the eyes more than the lab coat).

Was your dog a border collie or an Aussie? They're great at the srs face.

Feel free to gank the image. If you give me an email address (just send it to "my-user-name at gmail dot com") I'll pull any other pics I have and send you full-res images. Use them however you like.

Haha, I just picked the cold blue so I could get the cold Dr. House stare. ;D Also my real eyes are blueish/gray.

Naw he was a golden retriever/labrador mix with a pink nose. X3 I agree though, border collies and aussie's have great serious faces!

Oh awesome!!! my e-mail is malisonmagic at gmail dot com Thanks a ton!
