BCR and the 2010 Pet Expo!

After an exhausting week of office politics and over commitment there’s nothing like a weekend of running around with dogs and carnival food. The annual Orange County Pet Expo happened last weekend and I was there to help with the Border Collie Rescue booth.
Two things pre-cut:
Guess who!

Guess what breed this fur is from!

Here’s the best-of set
And here’s the complete photo set for the die-hards.
This was typical of my view for most of the weekend: I split my time between pimping dogs and running them around the fairgrounds. The dog here is named “Squeaky”

This year BCR had a fantastic group of rescues up for adoption. There were bc mixes that ranged from the huge (Buster/bc+St.Bernard? and Henry/bc+lab) to the petite (Dakota, below and Squeaky). Over the course of the weekend we adopted out over ten dogs to surprisingly perfect matches.
Dakota

The days were about twelve hours long and by the end of the night, I was exhausted both physically and emotionally. The ups of seeing dogs adopted and the downs of seeing some left behind were happening all day long (for three days).
You can tell a lot about an event by the parking lot. Try and guess what the owner of the plates in interested in!

This was new (for me): a club-booth for Southern California Aquatic Plant Enthusiasts They had some amazing fresh-water aquariums! Before I saw these, I thought that you could only make interesting aquariums with a salt water reef tank! I’m jazzed!

Oh, and about the two challenges before the cut:
The fur belongs to a beautiful Catahoula dog! Her fur looked just like camo-material. She was available for adoption: I was impressed with her calm, friendly demeanor in the middle of all the crowds and dogs and noise. Border Collie Rescue might post an adoption link on their site if she didn’t get adopted at the show.
And the familiar dog? -Not- R0ndo! This guy’s name is “Ripley” and he is a dead ringer for my R0ndo both in looks and personality and quirks. He was my second favorite dog at the show (after Squeaky). Calm and fun, even with the pressure of all the people and dogs and excitement. A –great- adopter took him home: she’d been looking for a good BC after her own of many years had to be put down a few months ago. So happy for them!

Date: 2010-04-24 03:40 pm (UTC)As to the cat show, it's a lot like a dog show, except they don't run the cat around the ring. Getting the cat to move naturally lets them see that everything is connected correctly and moves evenly. Also check reflexes, sort of like a doctor tapping your knee.
The picture of the hairless vs the furred cat illustrates just how much is hidden under the floof. So hands lets them make sure body is good under the floof. That weird posture of picking up the cat lets them check the spine is straight and also lets the judge feel the internal organs at same time.
As to the classes and what the ribbons all mean, don't know.
