Happy Valentine's Day, particularly to those of you lucky enough to have an SO to spend it with! Despite my singular status, I have no antipathy for the day. V's-day is still my second favorite holiday (after Halloween). Mind you, the day would be a LOT more enjoyable with an SO, but still...

My border collies are wonderful in most every way; the one area they fall short in is in the romance department. Romance for a border collie is apparently a big, meaty bone for each and a putrid fish carcass to roll in and set the mood. They -did- help me dig out gophers in the hillside earlier while I was planting some oak seedlings, but aside from dogwalk, that's about it for today!

r0ndohearts

What this means is I'd better quit perusing pointless online-dating sites (where everybody wants someone they can't have and pretends to be someone they aren't) and get active in some local groups. Maybe I can fulfill my resolution to do more training with R0ndo and Apache -and- meet more people! The trick is finding someone in the mundane world who watches equal parts of Cartoon Network and Animal Planet, thinks SDCC is neat AND enjoys speculating whether the tail of a giant, rubber monster in a Toho pic was tube-formed or carved...

Dogs are awesome, but they make bad husbands! :)

How does a dog make a bad husband? My dogs are always giving me presents (granted in the form of skinned toys), always happy to see me, and I have to make dinner for them anyways. I guess it's in the eye of the individual *shrugs*.

Wonderful as they are, they do fall short in several areas, SO-wise. Granted, they don't have a lot of the problems one has with significant others, but as noted above, there as just some things even dogs can't do/don't understand. Plus, you can't take them into most restaurants...

Drat, the restaurant issue!

I've often contemplated attending random local activity groups but, as you say, you can find someone who enjoys that specific activity but not one that appreciates all the same various aspects of life as me. .. the only guy I ever really met who liked me, did art, *and* had a dog he took to the dogpark; had just gotten out of jail for sexual assault -_-

Hell, just finding a useful group where the people are not all 20 years older than me and married is difficult >< And I stopped the online stuff once it matched me up with my older brother's best friend lol

Thankfully, while I'm not able to spend this Valentines with my SO, at least I do have one on this day for once lol Can't say it changes anything about how I approach the day, but it's fun to say.

Haha! The most perfect match online (interests, activities, dogs) turned out not to be female, yet. Or I'm matched with ex-girlfriends (I apparently am attracted to stuff I shouldn't be). Two people at the dogpark were nice possibilities, until buttons were pushed (one turns out to be a foam-at-the-mouth Republican and the other belonged to an alternate Christian sect...).

Sympathies on the age thing, but from the other end. At least your age group tends to be more single and more open to fannish stuff (conventions, comics, etc.)

At least you can have a mushy phone call!

I won't say that online sites are a substitute for IRL socual circles, but I have seen multiple instances where they brought acquaintances of mine soulmates. May I ask which sites you've tried?

Ummm...lessee:

--Eharmony (several years and the most boring people on the planet Earth)

--Match.com (I don't think anyone takes this seriously)

--Several pet/dog owner match sites (women seriously into dogs often have some control issues...)

--OKCupid (Far more interesting people! At least you can be Pagan or Muslim or athiest here, as op to Eharmony! Cute memes and stuff, but lots of people looking for something too perfect).

--Geek2Geek (Interesting and lots of geekiness, but not a big enough database. After the first go-through, very few new people showed up)

--Soulgeek (Interesting, may have the same pluses and minuses as G2G: lots of geekiness, not many users yet)

Very possibly I'm too picky, too: The fear of hooking up with the wrong (read: crazy or emotional vampire) woman far outweighs my desire to play the field. I don't have the time for the former and (for now) have to consider the latter a luxury.

I should tell you the story of how I met Crocuta, it's not what you would of imagined! I spent Valentine's day (and all day yesterday) selling rats. At least some people got a new friend for Valentine's day.

You should start up a border collie hiking group on meetup.com for SoCal. There's on in Seattle and one in Sac.

The mating habits of the Hyena are fascinating, yet better un-observed. Kind of like Politics and Sausage-Making.

I've thought about forming a group, but it gets down to "in my copius spare time" problems. I really think that Hashing would be cool (there's a great group in Singapore that does this), but again: time.

Have you thought about going back to school and taking a class or two? Great way to meet a LOT of people with at least one similar interest.

For meeting prospects, there's the same problem as with Anime cons: lots of people with similar interests, but mostly very young. Still, there's the possibility of meeting someone at Tracking or Freestyle Canine if I can get off my backside and find a place that's local (most are in Orange County and meet weeknights around 7pm, which is a traffic nightmare).

Haha, you described me! And I have a border collie! Could I be your dream girl?

Finnegan is totally swooning over Apache. I'm pretty sure he has a crush!

Finnegan has great taste in eyeware! What a fantastic dog! Do you work him at anything like herding, freestyle or agility?

I looked at your journal: wow! Sure!

Not only do you have the qualities you mention, but you own ferrets (my abject sympathies on your recent loss). I owned a couple sock-weasels back in the day and even published a book about their care then, too. Plus, you're Canadian and on the west coast! Wow. Plus, even if things don't work out, there's foundation for a great new friend/hiker/person-too-visit-in-BC! I'll friend you and you can read all my sordid friend's-only posts and see if you want to get a restraining order chat more!

Hah! Unfortunately I'm not in BC, but my brother lives in Whistler. :) He's going bonkers with work + Olympics right now, as he's a hotel manager! I'm in Ottawa. Mid-Canada. :D

I work Finnegan in herding right now, we go to lessons every few weeks. I'm hoping to get him into agility soon... his focus on me when other dogs are around really, really sucks, so we may take some private lessons first to get him really into the obstacles before bringing in distractions. He's a dream on sheep, he's from a great working breeder in western Ontario. I hope to trial with him a bit just to see what he's capable of. :D

Oh also I feel like a goon because I'm taken. :O BUT, I'm always up for making new friends. With border collies. Who likes kaiju. :D :D :D

Aw, man! I knew it was too good to be true! If things change with your SO, don't hesitate to let me know! Do you go to any conventions? Border collies and kaiju-- two great things that you almost never find together in the Real World! We could talk for hours!

Herding is cool, but I have to drive out into the boonies to find classes (not easy in the sprawling metro that L.A. has become). From what I read, he's still a puppy, so concentration is not going to be his strong suit. You'll notice him start to stead at two years and really become dignified and focused when he turns three!

Check out Freestyle Agility, too: it's fun and the people involved with it are not nearly as hard-core as most agility people are.

haha, you're so sweet. <3 I still feel like a goon. Throw me an IM if you want - AIM is lemurmar!

Sucks about having to drive far. My trainer is about an hour away, so we have a lesson once every two or three weeks. We haven't gone much since November due to snow, so I'm itching to get back out into the field with him again. So awesome to watch the switch turn on. :)

And yeah, he's only 15 months, very much still a puppy. I also suck at working on recalls and distance commands. He's not reliable off leash yet, something I had hoped we'd have by now. He's fine if he's got a small herd of sheep to care for, but outside of sheep he's too distracted and not mi8ndful of me to go anywhere unfenced. :( I'm so used to offleash dogs, it's weird to have one I can take to the neighbourhood park for a game of ball! I'm hoping with consistency we'll get that recall down pat.

I'm lousy with AIM-- I'm so self-absorbed that I forget to let people know when I'm AFK...sometimes for days. I get back to a screen full of "Hello?"-type messages followed by mockery!

I guess I shouldn't be whinging so much-- my place for herding lessons is about an hour away, too. I have no excuse, really: I just need to make the time. If I can get them down on the basics, I have a friend with a small herd of sheep we can practice on.

I'm sure it's a little frustrating about the recall/paying attention, but his puppy days are so much fun it's worth it to just enjoy the show (but I'm sure you're well aware of this already!). A three year old bc is so much more attentive/soldier-like/dignified than a <2yr old. You should get some pet ducks for him to herd!
