The biggest surprise at FC this year was when a friend of [livejournal.com profile] martes showed her a French comic he'd found. The title is Le Boit des Vierges (The Virgin Woods) and the story takes place in a Tudor-era world where humans exist with anthropomorphic animals-- the High Beasts (wolves so far) and the Low Beasts (foxes and lynx so far).

I was blown away. This is easily my favorite comic to date: it is an amazing blend of humans and animals; graphic battles and romance; story and character. There is a great wiki article on the book , with the story summarized and a character guide. You can order it from Amazon France or wait until Amazon Canada re-stocks.

Another reason I like this so much? The costume possibilities are tantalizing...

"The Virgin Woods" by Jean Dufaux and Béatrice Tillier

Fantastic French "comic" about a Tudor-era world of humans and animals. There is constant battling between the two groups, which has worsened with the use of firearms by the humans.

This is an amazing combination of story and art-- right up there with Canales & Guarnido's "Blacksad" series.

The art of The Virgin Woods is detailed and the tones enhance every scene. Béatrice Tillier is one of those rare artists who can draw humans and animals with equal skill-- whose animals are just as expressive as their human counterparts.

There is just the one volume out, with the second in the series scheduled for release in time for this year's Angouleme (not sure if it came out or not...Angouleme was the last week in January).

I used to collect the Black Sad's back in the day. I even took trips to France just to get the next volume. ;) Sadly, I'm not 'next door' to France any more.
This one looks fantastic. And yes, Tudor partials would look very dashing. :)

Possibly 15, depending on how you count it. I went and ordered the sucker off Amazon.fr, it looks lovely and I didn't want to forget about it since the .fr wishlist is not connected to the .com one. My US account worked, though!
