A friend wrote about Obama's Beer Summit and that some politicians are trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.

The Beer Summit may have been the coolest moment in US Presidential history. There are a lot of things that Obama has been doing that drives me crazy*, but sitting down with those two guys and having a talk over beer was just pure innocent, getting-to-the-heart-of-the-matter, genius. So casual and so disarming a way to defuse a tense situation that threatened to blow up (fueled by all parties). The president invites you to have a beer with him. What can you do?

Now a situation that began badly could turn into a catalyst for social improvement, with the two parties working together rather than work as adverseries.

I'm surprised that there was not more controversy over the beer served ...beer politics (*sigh*).

A beer with the President-- how cool is that!

*Mostly involving spending inconceivable amounts of $$$, and having those few able to survive financially pay that bill.

Hmmmm. I wonder if we could pay off part of the national debt that way.

$100 to sit down and have a beer with the President. Plus the price of the beer, of course.

Obama would turn into such a lush. :)

I thought it was freakin' brilliant. It also sort of gave this "Obama, he's just this guy, y'know?" vibe which was cool.

Obama drank Bud Light? I'm so disappointed... >_> And I'm not even a beer drinker!

But if he'd drank decent beer people would have complained about him being elitist and drinking fancy-schmancy Harvard smarty pants beer!

At least he didn't crush a beer can on his head.

Yeah, it's a cool idea. But I heard things didn't go entirely smoothly (http://www.theonion.com/content/news_briefs/cambridge_cop_accidentally?utm_source=a-section) when he tried to put it into practice.

I'm quite pleased with the concept of this "beer summit" and the way it's helped defuse an ugly situation. I can also understand why the beers that were chosen, were chosen -- they're very much beers of the common man. That said -- and this should prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that I've finally become a beer snob from living in Portland -- like the Beer Sommelier, I might have hoped for something more erudite from the President's table. That the B.S. likes bourbon-barrel imperial stouts shows the guy knows what he's talking about, and in fact I have several bottles of Old Rasputin (including some of their reserve) in my cabinet right now. Now if you really want to entertain, and don't have to drive or chart the course of the Free World for a while afterwards, bust out some of Nøgne-Ø's Dark Horizon or, from closer to home, Oskar Blues Grill's Ten Fidy.

...I guess Obama can't be doing his job too badly if people like me find time to critique his taste in beer. ^^;;;
