Poofy Chicks, Stinky Dogs and Werewolves!

I’m watching werewolves fighting Vikings. Eating a rare steak. Earlier the dogs and I had a good hike. Not the same as being up in Seattle at Norwescon, but it'll do!

“Thor: Hammer of the Gods” is a “made for Sci Fi Channel” feature: words that portend lousy CG effects, bad acting and a terrible script. One of the Vikings actually says, “I was hoping you could give me some insight into that.” Amazingly, this movie is all that and— surprisingly— more. They actually show werewolves fighting Vikings— though the werewolf masks are somewhat clunky and the werewolves move like they’re afraid of getting their feet dirty. And cinematography is kind of dark. But, pointy-nosed werewolves galore! Certainly better than "Warwolves", another MFSFC abomination with werewolves that consisted of actors with black-painted noses and wolf-eye contacts. Honestly, do these filmmakers really believe that black-painted noses look -less- silly than wolf-headed actors?

Yesterday while taking a walk in the wash, the kildees were more raucous than usual. Then Roz spotted these little things:



She picked one up to keep it from being trampled by the dogs. The tiny birds (we saw three or four) were in no danger from their jaws—but their feet were another matter. Roz said I should get these up for Tracy, who will swoon at their poofiness!



R0ndo kept trying to get us to throw this mucky branch he found. The thing weighed about thirty pounds, and the last time I tried to throw a stick that big I strained my neck. Finally I tossed it into a small, deep pond. He was frantic! His beloved stick! Water!



R0ndo can swim but doesn’t care for to do it. He whimpered and whined around the water. Finally, he leapt in (and got completely dunked!) and managed to drag it out. He also gave me SUCH a look as he swam out to get it. Then he got the first part of his revenge: shake!

The dogs stank like dirty aquarium filters. Fishy and mucky. That was the second part of their revenge; it was so bad I had to bathe them. Water everywhere. I felt so bad about it (they were wet and pitiful-looking all evening) that I let R0ndo have the bed.

Is that a new movie? I was approached last year to make a Thor costume for a screen test. I wonder if it was for that movie....didn't make it though. They wanted a free rendering.

Dogs definitely have a sense of JUSTICE.

...I miss having a malamute. IF I find a decent house to buy this year, I'm going to rescue a malamute or GSD, for sure.

Sci-Fi originals are always good fun, for all of the wrong reasons.

Dog Soldiers is probably one of the best 'Budget' werewolf films, and the costumes themselves are actually amazing, with a rare hairless style of wolfie. Cant beat seeing a fistfight with a werewolf.

Aww, those baby birds are just precious. ♥ And haha, my dog is just the opposite - he's a labrador retriever so he practically bounds into any water source he happens to find and pouts when we call him away from it.

Brand new movie-- it just premiered on Sci Fi (oops! "Sy Fy") Channel. From the film, it was not actually Thor, the god: the whole crew of the viking ship was named after the gods (Freya, Tir, Thor, etc.), but they were regular vikings (obviously drawn without reference material).

Free renderings sound like the level of production company that SyFy hires. SyFy doesn't actually -make- them, they have a couple of production companies that make their "made for" films.

Totally agree. I love/hate it when barbarians speak like English majors! I hope they get over their CG fetish. None of it holds up, even when -new-. Get back to rubber suits and practical effects!

Dog Soldiers was GREAT! Probably because it -wasn't- a SyFy made-for...I love the great dialogue, the dark humor and, or course, a border collie playing tug-of-war with a soldier's own intestines!

Some borders love water, others hate it. I guess it depends on their confidence. I'd love to get them both to love it: we even have dog-friendly water for them to explore.

Labs are funny: any puddle of water is enough for them! At the dog park here, the labs will consider a mud-puddle "enough water" and lounge in them. They have very understanding, indulgent owners (who -know- what their dogs will do and still let them!).

Heh, yeah. It's impossible to keep a lab out of water, you might as well let them enjoy themselves. :) He ends up getting himself all muddy half of the time but we take him out in the park so he can run around and be as messy as he wants.

I think Rudyard Kipling had a line of poetry somewhere, speaking about the preservation of the British Empire being thanks to "Rough Men with Guns". Almost ANY conflict being portrayed today doesn't seem to be written by anybody who has ever spent time in a military unit, or understands the coarser nature of the peasantry (or bandit hoardes, or raiders in general) through history.

Well, you were missed at Norwescon. We *DID* have two fursuits in our (very) small Masquerade this year and both won awards. :)

A minotaur - with both workmanship and performance Master awards, and a griffin novice who won for wonderful wings.

Since I didn't go home last night, I just blanked on their names AND forgot the minotaur's card in my other bag--I tucked in with our masquerade stuff.

I'm always surprised when someone with fighting experience does write something: when I pick up a book I've become used to armchair warriors and their fantasy style. The most surprising book for me was one about the Norse pantheon/Twilight of the Gods: they got the weapons and fighting right. Further surprise: the author was a woman (who happened to be the president of the Florida NRA chapter and, I believe, a vet).

Flying around us, trying to distract us away from their chicks. Unfortunately, they do this so often (even without chicks) that we didn't realize there were chicks until we almost stepped on them. The kildees cried "wolf!" once too often!

With my dogs, it's usually foxtails and related burrs. There's also some kind of plant with sticky leaves that has thrived in the burn areas.

I missed me being at Norwescon, too. This really is the masquerade that I have the most fun at, and the post-masq party doesn't hurt, either! There are bigger masquerades and cons with more costumers (like CC), but Norwescon-- to me-- has that perfect balance of sf con and costuming and socializing. Hopefully I'll rectify this next year!

Thanks for the heads-up on the creatures! I know the minotaur: Mike/Aetobatus. He did a fantastic job on the costume and I've been able to see it up-close.

I would liked to have seen the skits, but hopefully someone will YouTube them sooner than later!
