I think Rudyard Kipling had a line of poetry somewhere, speaking about the preservation of the British Empire being thanks to "Rough Men with Guns". Almost ANY conflict being portrayed today doesn't seem to be written by anybody who has ever spent time in a military unit, or understands the coarser nature of the peasantry (or bandit hoardes, or raiders in general) through history.
