I'm going to be in Germany in late August and was wondering if anyone had any cool must-do's or see's in the Frankfurt area. I'll be travelling with someone slightly familiar with the country, but who is gimpy and slightly allergic to unnecessary-fun (tourist traps, wine tasting, sight-seeing). So ideal suggestions would be cool destinations-- like the ultimate flea-market or surplus stores or used book districts. Super ideal would be "the museum of werewolf costumes and wolf puppets" (but I'm not holding my breath). Unfortunately, the one big festival around that time-- Museumsuferfest Frankfurt. -- occurs directly opposite the event I'm going over for. The "Fairy-Tale Road sounds neat-- but that's for a longer trip. Also falls under "unnecessary-fun". We have maybe a day or two extra that we could add. Anything great in the (stage) theaters in Frankfurt this summer? Anything? Hello?

It's quite a ways west of Frankfurt, but I've been to this one it's a good one - the Bad Duerkheim Weinfest is held in late August. And if ya don't mind wandering 'round the R.-Pfalz, I've got more - you can schedule a tour of the tunnels and catacombs beneath Emperor Barbarosa's castle in Kaiserslautern - you can actually see the bones of a knight and his horse down there. Further west in the town of Homburg are the palace mountain caverns which are 11 levels of totally hand-dug caves and tunnels, and entire city underground. 4 of those levels (at least when I was there) are open for tour. Frankenstein castle is near the town of Hochspeyer - it was just ruins when I was there but I understand now they have tours. Tip of the iceberg.

sorry I wish I knew more about the immediate Frankfurt area... I did spent 2 years living in the Pfalz west of there and did a LOT of exploring. So if ya have any possibilities of heading out that way, I can definitely give you some ideas... well, *more* ideas. :)

Oooh-- cool suggestions! I have this fantasy-vision of the horse and knight skeleton standing in the catacombs just like in a horror movie...but I'm guessing that they are more respectfully interred. Frankenstein Castle looks really cool (I peeked at Google). Definitely tempted (not too far from Frankfurt!).
