Just heard an interesting piece on the news about how seriously Disney is taking the Indian market (3 out of ten kids in the world are Indian!). Their first collaboration is a CG animated feature titled, " Roadside Romeo ". romeo The story: A rich, cool, spoiled brat of a dog is abandoned on the wicked streets of Mumbai. He faces new situations and dangerous, loony characters, the likes of which he has never met before. The promo trailers are pretty funny-- especially if you know Bollywood: Romeo does impersonations of India's cliche' male stars.
You can bet there's a built-in fandom for these characters already! The female co-star (played by Kareena Kapoor) .... well, you figure it out: Laila's video

Looks a darn sight better than the pigeon movie Valiant. The character designs look pretty cool and I like the touches that let you know this is a foreign production (and not blanketed by US pop culture references). Fingers crossed that it'll be a picture to enjoy once it's out.

What I'm hoping for is that Disney does more of these-- lower-budget animated films, especially not targeted to the US. The trouble now is that every Disney animated feature *has* to be another "Lion King" or it's considered a failure-- so they over-develop projects so that they are *guaranteed* to be a success. Or worse, if the film looks like it might be a hit, every exec tries to stick their "creative" finger into the production so that they can take credit for its success. The days of sleeper hits like Mulan or Lilo are pretty much gone (actually, they were already gone, but those two snuck through somehow).
