Black Dogs of the British Isles

I was catching up on the fantastic web comic, Gunnerkrigg Court and wanted to learn more about these guys:

Black Dogs

Thanks to a quick Google, I found this link about black dogs. Great jumping off point for more research!

Black dog factoid: Did you know that generally across the US, black dogs are the least likely of any color to be adopted from shelters? Some shelters put them down quickly because they know from experience (or superstition or their own bias) that they won't be adopted out.

If I ever get a totally black dog, I'm SO naming her, "Skriker"!

apparently it's the same with cats; black cats tend to languish in shelters far longer than any other colour. We have two adopted black cats, sweetest little things, who had been at the shelter a fair while before we got there.

Morwyn was the last of two unpicked from her litter, the other was a little black and white boy. All the merles had found homes already. I ♥ Morwyn...

There were quite a number of very loved black dogs (completely black) at the dog park yesterday. :)

Heh, we've got a black labrador and he's the polar opposite of being evil. Although he is pretty mischievous and likes to knock down anything and everything with his tail. ;)

Wow, how interesting! I adopted my black dog from a shelter. Very cute, well behaved...but had been there for six weeks before I snatched her up. I always wondered why, perhaps the black thing (and that she wasn't a puppy) was against her? I could just never figure why she would get passed over for that long.

I knew this was true for cats (there's the whole "bad luck" ridiculousness) but had no idea it also applied to dogs.

People are dumb sometimes. :-( My little black cat (a rescue kitteh) is incredibly sweet and loving - in fact she's much more cuddly and lovey dovey than her tabby sister! My friend who does cat rescue works says of black cats that people tend to either love them or hate them. That's really sad to me, that people could be so prejudiced (but we see it in other areas too so I guess I should not be surprised.)
