Back to con reports and stuff!

RBW

Here is the official RBW photo site

RBW was the main catalyst for Steve and I going to London. This was their first year as a real convention with guests and programming: in the past, these events have been more like gathers and big parties. The con staff did a fine job of coordinating and running this con: events were entertaining and ran smoothly. My only critique was that the venue was a pub that was not adjacent to the hotel. Fortunately, this didn't prove much of a problem-- the Tube made comings and goings fast and efficient-- I only had one bad moment when the doors of a crowded train closed with my hand on the outside of the car. Those hands were gripping two large bags filled with werewolf. Fortunately, a nice passenger helped me pry the doors open enough to drag the bags in.

The hilight of the convention for me was finally meeting [livejournal.com profile] fatkraken and getting to see her costumes in-person! For the record, she's very nice and her costumes are wonderful! There's a lot of detail that photos don't show. I enjoyed watching her Amateresu (Okami) in the games! We got to talk and trade costuming techniques-- hopefully she'll come over to the 'States soon! She also gave a very good tutorial on costume building, complete with Powerpoint presentation!

From what I had heard, I didn't think there would be a lot of people in costume. Much to my surprise, there were a LOT of costumers! Easily 50+ at various times! The locals have done a lot of good work, especially considering the lack of resources like fur and mesh!

The highlight of the convention is the Saturday night cruise: the con rents a boat that travels up the Thames and back. On the boat is a nice buffet, two bars and a dance floor. Plenty of room for costuming and celebrating. Plus, if you got too hot in-costume, you could go out on the deck and cool off and see the sights along the river. Hilights for me were the Millenium Expo buildings the Locks at the end of the Thames and the Greenwich meridian laser! The latter is a bright, green laser cutting through the sky and showing where the 0-degree longitude line is! 2-the-Ranting-Griffin and Kage gave performances as well, between sets of the dance.

Festive Talbain (the tree-hugger!)-- at least he was color-themed for the con!

The trip to the docks alone was worth its weight in pictures: over two hundred fans, many of them in costume (kudos to those iron-suiters!), walking a half mile to the docks! We made quite a sight! Fortunately, the con-committe did a fine job directing traffic and fans and there were no casualties!

Back to the hotel and crashing for the night!

Sunday was more socializing and the charity auction. The pub was really cozy: I spent the day talking to people and drinking cane-sugared Coke (woo!). The charity auction went well: Fatkraken's donated partial went for the big $$$ (<-- pounds, actually). The surprise for me was the extra can of endback I had and put into the auction: it went for 30 pounds! The NFT scraps I had for the demos also brought in money, as did the Lynx head I donated. All in all, the auction raised a lot of money for their charity, "The Mammal Trust UK".

Next year should be even better: they're planning on using the convention space at the con hotel and eliminate the extra travel! I saw the space already because there was a comic book collectors convention on Sunday! To my disappointment, most of the stuff there was American-- the only thing that distinguished it from a typical US con were the prices (in sterling).

The RBW folks were very nice: Rapido, Foxb and Wolfpaw were terrific to Steve and me-- they really worked hard to bring this off! Special thanks to Tryst who-- despite his protestations-- did a fantastic job getting Steve, me and all my boxes to the hotel! Totally appreciate it, Tryst!

Merry Christmas!

I do not know what RBW is - a costumer's convention? Anthropomorphic or Anime Fan gathering? - but it sure looks like it must have been fun, and colorful! Glad you and Steve had a good time!

Again - Merry Christmas, to you and Rhondo and Apache!
