Took my last day off from costuming and went to the Border Collie Rescue Funday out in El Mirage (middle of nowhere, USA). I wondered how many people would show up when the weather report predicted temps around 100 and my car thermometer topping 102. Not to worry: lots of people and dogs-- possibly because this was also the farewell party of a very active, longtime member of BCR.

Though topping a hundred degrees, the air was dry and the area was very comfortable. Here's a guy with everything he needs : a ball, a pool and his pals. There was a very graceful, slender foster dog there today. His name is griffen!

Rondo was ready.

Basically a great day off! I'm all re-set and ready to get cracking on the final stretch of construction!

From the pictures, it looks like there is a _lot_ more civilisation in El Mirage now then there was when I left the desert in 1983. Most of it was centered at a small cluster of houses at the west end of El Mirage Dry Lake, or at the Lazy 3 cafe to the south, or at the glider port (old auxiliary field to the Victor Army Air Field (later George AFB) during WWII), with the adjacent aircraft salvage dealer, and the dolomite plant, and the alfalfa fields on the periphery. To the East was Adelanto, the South was Phelan, to the West was Saddleback Butte, and to the north, the Shadow Mountains.

Considering all the housing that has sprung up between Baldy Mesa, Adelanto, Hesperia and Victorville, I bet El Mirage is now a thriving collection of look-alike Ticky-tacky, "Priced in the 180's to low 220's".

Actually, El Mirage is still pretty unchanged from what you describe. Victorville and Hesperia have a ton of tract housing/civilization. The center of things in El Mirage is still the Lazy 3 and the little market. Funny, I had just asked a local what, exactly, downtown El Mirage was like! This little park was probably around then, too.
