Rondo and I went to the Border Collie Fun Day yesterday. I went out with one dog and came back with two...

Meet Apache!



She was from a litter of one of the volunteers and had to be returned because the family she was placed with (lots of kids) had one little girl who (a month later) was diagnosed with cancer and because of the chemo had to give Apache up. Considering how gentle a BC Apache is, I consider it a HUGE honor that she would consider placing her with me. We're trying it out to see if there's good chemistry between Rondo and Apache.

Rondo and Apache were so tired after the funday that they fell asleep on each other on the way home. I'm not even sure they were aware of each other on the trip home, though Rondo was sure surprised when we arrive: he was all, "Uh, I think you accidentally took home some strange dog...!"

Thanks! She's a little minx! Definitely omega-puppy, but surviving as low-man has taught her how to work her puppy-cute wiles.

We're trying it out for a couple of weeks to see if the chemistry is good. If they get along and Rondo is too traumatized--Rondo's in his, "But I thought I was going to be an only child!" pout (which is less and less each day). Logistics will be a MUCH bigger challenge, tho'. I may leave her with friends if I air-travel with Rondo.

That was kind of a fluke: they were so exhausted after the fun-day that they both just passed out in the back seat. Rondo was -very- surprised when we got home and here was this strange dog still in the car!

Yes-- I'm discovering exactly that! While there is neat buddy-feeling with just one dog to focus attention on, watching the dynamics of the two dogs is fascinating!

The good news for you on the new dog: Apache is just about guaranteed to be kid-safe! Roberta (her breeder) had placed her with a family with kids and was intending on re-homing her in a family with kids again because she -very- kid-tested. Your chibi can snuggle her 'till Apache's eyes bug out (assuming yours can withstand the licking-onslaught of mine).

That's exactly the benchmark/successful sign I'll be looking for: when they actually seek each other out to sleep together. From current signs, that looks likely soonish.

I'm mostly convinced to keep her name (using the shorter and more apt "'Patch"), but I have exhumed my list of names considered too-girly for Rondo (Piper, Pepper, Kia [to go with "Rondo], etc.).

She'd be a GREAT pirate! I'll make her a little striped head-scarf to wear! Of course, I -will- have to get her used to costumes-- she's not nearly as easy-going about them as Rondo is.

After seeing so many black and white BC's, it's fascinating to see a white and black one. Nice looking pair; hope they'll get along well as it seems they're doing already. What fun!

She's definitely a character-- very unusual face. I had pictured getting something more like her sister (little B&W, like Rondo), but I seem to be getting personalities rather than archetypical bc's.

They're discovering that when I'm in the smelly hole (smelly=ozone from all the computer/video equipment), I'm no fun for at least an hour or two, so they investigate each other. Fun is right!

I'm pretty sure Rondo will like being a big brother to Apache. They're both going through a lot of change right now: Rondo from puppy to dog and only-dog to one-of-two; Apache is going from pack omega to alpha female. Fascinating!

Oh, I'm sure I'll have to start putting her pics behind a cut to prevent complaints of inundating people's flists. Hopefully I'll be able to bring both of them up to see you and Carol and Tay soon. I've gotten my sheepherding books and dvd's, so I'm studying up!

You should definitely bring them up soon! The grass is green and the wildflowers are blooming… but I don't know how much longer that situation will last given our disastrous rainy season.

From my experience, the best thing you can do to get a dog ready to start on sheep is make sure they have a dependable and immediate "Lie down!"

BTW, we are giving serious thought to getting sheep. It pretty much depends on getting money to afford the fencing now. I really want to get Tay back on sheep* and have been thinking about the possibility of "starting" pups for extra money.
