I can tell when I'm procrastinating when I cook. Today I dashed over to the market and got some sausage and Pilsbury orange sticky buns. I stir fried the sausage with some leftover wild rice while the buns baked. Wild rice & sausage, hot orange sticky buns and pineapple juice. And I -still- haven't done my year-end or my resolutions post! Woo!

Further stalling, I spotted a hoot-owl (western great horned) in the pine trees yesterday! I was using Rondo's new tennis ball chucker and nearly beaned the owl in the tree (who glared balefully at us). This owl (or one very like her) occasionally roosts in the trees in the backyard. I hadn't heard her plaintive "hoot" in a while, so I was glad to see she's still around.

hootowl

The owl watched Rondo chase the ball up and down the hillside but otherwise didn't budge.

There are two cool cars that are parked nearby. Does anyone have a clue as to what they are?

And now to go back into the shop and retire the notion of getting those posts done at all today...

Aww, that reminds me of the time a baby snowy owl sat on the lid of our hot tub to warm himself up. :) Owls are such neat birds.

A -snowy- owl?!? Where in the world do you live?!? I'd *love* to see a snowy owl in my backyard! Generally all we have are GHO's and spooky barn owls.

I live in Michigan, but even here they're pretty rare. It was a really cold winter that year, so I guess that's why they came down. :) Unfortunately I didn't have a camera on hand, but I'll always remember that moment.

The white one's a Rolls-Royce, I'm pretty sure. Not sure of the year - early 50's?

You made me hungry. Wild rice & sausage, hot orange sticky buns and pineapple juice... mmmm.

Owls are awesome!

FWIW-- the wild rice and sausage was a wonderful combo...and the Pilsbury buns were (as expected) delish!

the white one is a Packard, of '37-'40 vintage. The red one is a '49 Mecury that has been very customized. the headlights on it are likely from a '40 Ford. It's grille is made up from parts of a '54 Chevy.

In further reference, it looks like a'41. The "One Twenty" on the hood refers to the car's wheelbase.

Cool! Thanks for the detailed info-- I'd been curious about them for years (especially the Mercury). I worry that the Packard will get crunched-- their house (which it's parked out in front of) is kind of at the "T" of a T-intersection.

Looks like a pair of cars straight out of a 40's Chicago gangster movie. Those are some beautiful cars...talk about fun to cruise in!

GHO's usually don't hang out in full light like that.

Both those vehicles need be Pixar'd.

I was -very- surprised to see her (it's either a she or a HUGE male) in the bright sun of the tree like that. Not sure what was up, but this -was- during second night of the cold snap we've been having. Maybe she was sunning to warm up.

I think this is the same one that was roosting in the pine tree outside my bathroom window a couple of years ago. Normally they rest in a group of tall pines across the block, but the recent high winds actually snapped one of those huge trees in half (the center tree of a group of four, oddly). Maybe she thought my trees were a safer roost for a while.

Great snap of the owl.. I don't think I've ever seen one in the wild that clearly during daytime... plenty of night silhouettes though...

How rude, launching tennis balls at an owl. =P

The only ball that got even remotely near her was the first-- and that was because I had no idea there was an owl there. She didn't seem bothered, though (beyond turning her head to watch us). After I spotted her, I made sure the tosses were well-away from her.

Owls like dogs: they flush out game!

Small dogs are even better, if they don't flush enough game, they can simply fill in. :)
