...though one might ask, "What day -isn't- a dog vacation?!!"

I noticed a thread on a Yahoo! group were someone asked where the best places to vacation with their dogs was. One person mentioned a place in North Carolina, so I post this link for [livejournal.com profile] calicougar:

Four Paws Kingdom is a dog friendly/oriented campground in Rutherfordton, NC that also has WiFi/internethotspots (for Brian). Dunno much about it, though their website is pretty thorough (lots of pics and info). Might be a nice, close, cheap vacation spot for you guys.

For me (and Rondo) my favorite places are anywhere with lots of pine trees and water. For the most part, that means Seattle, though Big Bear (if it doesn't burn down) and June Lake (near Mammoth) are high on the list. June Lake also has a motel that is dog-friendly and has its own kitchenette/fridge!

Anyone else have any suggestions?

...Big Bear (if it doesn't burn down)...

Have they not been able to extinguish that wildfire yet? o_o

No, and the worry is that it could merge with the other big fire. They could really use some rain and lower temps. That area is also at-risk because the trees dead from the bark beetle infestation. Fingers crossed that they make some headway in controlling them.

Oh no... that's horrible... My family's home was threatened last year and the year before that by several of the fires. I hope that the firefighters are able to get it under control soon... This weather is insane...

My confusion is why don't they rent out those Scoopers from Canada like they used to several years ago? Those really helped to tame the fires that they were called in to fight. These firefighters that are battling these fires on foot are suffering from many counts of heat exhaustion...

L.A. County is too cheap to keep them here year-round: they arrive sometime in August or September (I think) and leave in November or December. I'm not sure what the other counties do, but L.A. is messed up. I've actually seen the Canadian scoopers leave for the year a few times: they take off from Van Nuys Airport (visible to me) and then circle the valley a couple of times before leaving.

Oh, you live right near my hometown! Small world!

Anyways, yeah, L.A. is... weird... It's just a horrible situation as well for the firefighters who, again, have to battle these things from the ground. I mean, they have helicopters that drop water, but... those drop next to nothing.

Not necessarily a vacation but the best dog day in the SF bay area I have had is a day at the old Albany Landfill turned dog park (It is nicer than those pics suggested. It is on the Berkeley/Albany border, on the bay with views of the city and bridges and the flower covered decay of past civilization) then a short drive to University and San Pablo Ave in Berkeley where you can snag some BBQ from Everett & Jones before heading across the street with said food and going into the Albatross pub (with your dog AND food of course) and having a pint near the fireplace.

Oh, and if you don't drink the Albatross also has supposedly good cheesecake (ask Wes) and sodas.

I grew up in NC, and I've decided (since I left), it's really a pretty part of the country. The weather is generally good, especially close to or in the mountains (where that place is located). If you ever make it to NC for any reason, I also highly recomment the NC Zoo. Though not as well known, I rank it up there with the SF wild animal park in terms of animal care and general experience...
