Urinetown and Spelling Bees

I just found out that I missed Urinetown's swing through Los Angeles! I think there's still a performance on June 10th, but I'll be out of the area that day. *Nrrg!* And Jeff McCarthy -- who created Officer Lockstock on Broadway-- was touring with this show! Urinetown has somehow wormed its way onto my "top ten favorite shows".
That got me back to checking Broadway.com to see what else I'm missing. The creators of "Urinetown" are working on a new play that sounds...interesting (but I thought the same of "Urinetown").
Then there's "Tarzan: the Musical"-- not sure about this one, but the costumes should be nice.
And "Mary Poppins: the Musical"-- also not sure how much I'd like this w/o Andrews and Van Dyke.
"Lestat"? ANOTHER vampire musical. Possibly strike three for me: "Dance of the Vampires" was a joke; "Dracula: the Musical" was strike two.
I'd love to see the revival of "Sweeny Todd" but I'm not sure if it'll still be around when I get there this fall.
And "Les Mis" is being revived (already?!?), but isn't opening until after the fall trip.
"The ThreePenny Opera" will be at Studio 54: This one looks *great*!!!...but is closing June 18 (bah!)
And then there's..."Lord of the Rings-- the Musical"?!? WTF? Not sure when this is coming to Broadway...tested in Toronto earlier this year.
And then there are the Tonys, which are this Sunday.
BTW, if "The Putnam County Spelling Bee" comes to your town, make the time to see this! Greatest little show ever! You won't regret it!

Date: 2006-06-07 06:30 pm (UTC)For some reason the theatre director in my high school liked to make musicals out of things that shouldn't be musicals. Thus we had Antigone: the Musical. Alright, it only had ONE song, but it was still rather weird to have singing in antigone.
They generally did a good job for high school productions. I have Antigone the musical on tape (along with dracula the not musical) because one of my friends played a shoeless crazy man in both productions. He complained he was being typecast.

Hopefully the costumes will be good at least. (of course, you can't always trust reviews)
