I spent about a week at a friend's home somewhere in the wilds of the midwest. No real net access; three channels of television (2 PBS stations and NBC). Cellphone often worked if you stood in the driveway, near the flagpole. One of the most relaxing weeks I've ever had. Discovered that dandilion preserves are *wonderful*. I can see why the locals have so little interest in geopolitical politics: out here, there really is only your family, the corn and the weather. Stephen King country. Starry sky like you wouldn't believe.

Besides the cornfield, there are a number of creeks and a large patch of woods at the back of the property. At this time of the year everything is a verdunt green.

I finally got to see what poison ivy looks like (slightly different than poison oak, but not terribly so).

One evening, I was very excited to spot an owl on top of a vent on the barn. Despite misgivings by the others, I insisted it was an owl...either a burrowing owl or some small screech owl. Took many pictures. The next day, I realized my mistake...and had to endure, "Hey, your owls are back on the barn!" comments all day.

Reminds me of the farm house I grew up in back in Ohio.... Especially that creek shot.

That's pretty cool. Have you always just been in the hustle and bustle of the California cities? Stuff like what you showed, I'm kinda surrounded by everyday. With a pinch of modernness, it can be relaxing. Oh, and the owl thing... Funny. Turns out I got a photo shot at a small owl the other day too. The mocking birds were fussing for some reason and it turned out to be an tiny owl.

I'm totally a city-boy. I spent time in the rural/farm country of central California, but it's -nothing- like the equivalent country in Middle America. I enjoyed the stay for a lot of reasons-- the detached, relaxed atmosphere most of all-- but a reliable (doesn't even have to be broadband!) would have made it perfect. Unfortunately, out where they live I think they're SOL when it comes to the internet.

Sounds like you had a good time :)
Life in the midwest is surely different and I could go on at length about it since I grew up there and only recently got forced into city life. If you ever wish to chat about it I'd love to compare perspectives on the subject!
The creek pics look nice and relaxing and familiar :)
