Back to costuming! Here are some pics from Costume Con 24, held in (surprise!) Des Moines, IA. The locals ran a friendly, efficient convention. The hotel (Hotel Fort Des Moines) was one of the best I've ever attended a con at: the staff loved us, the rooms were nice and the hotel is beautiful. The only downside was that-- being located in the downtown of an insurance town-- there were a couple of days where all the restaurants were closed. Fortunately, the snak bar the hotel set up had really good hot dogs (with plentiful saurkraut!) and decent sandwiches. I learned to stock up on sandwiches for the evening meal.
I did miss out on a nice meal outing by some of the costumers on Monday, but I was bushed. When I finally rose from the dead I went for the walk cited in the last post.
A small caveat about the pics here: I'm mostly interested in creature costumes and my pals. There were some amazing costumes, like the one that won Best In Show that I did not get good pics of. No disrespect meant-- just not my passion. So don't judge the variety or levels of costume at the con by the smattering of costumes I'm showing here.
This was one of my favorite: Edna "E" Mode! She stayed in-character all evening (the social on Friday night).

This costume was supposed to debut at last year's con, but she had a catastrophic failure and had to bow out. A spectacular costume, with wonderful documentation (it's dead-on to the statue the costume's based upon).

Dani and her SO Darieum (I'm sorry if I'm getting your name wrong!) are a Yoshitaka Amano fan's dream! He has classic Eastern European looks to go with a tall, wirey frame (complete with a wonderful accent). Dani has a shut-in manga artist's dream figure. In this costume it all comes together:

Darieum-- just remember to look cruel! That completes the whole, frightening effect!

Best use of an industrial material?

Dani and Darieum: Best Crow costume I've ever seen performed

All-in-all a fun convention. Next year, St. Louis!
