Mushrooms

When I got back home the other night, I found a pair of large mushrooms growing in the back lawn. Two days later they transformed into something hardly recognizable from their original forms:

Not sure if they're edible, but their shingle-y surface makes me think so. I just can't believe that they're the same mushrooms!

The weather up north was very autumnal: crisp and clear. And I was just in time to pick some green persimmons (I prefer them when they're still pretty unripe: I like the tartness and crisp texture). Forgot to gather bay-tree seeds and seedlings tho'.

Hey, Iisaw! Can I bug you for some of those white-oak acorns (no holes if possible!) and seedlings?

[Alopex] Ooh ooh! I know what those are! They're called "shaggy mane" mushrooms, though I think some folks call them "inky cap" mushrooms for good reason. They're known to occur around the globe and have that interesting trait of disintegrating into "ink" as they mature. They're even edible, though I've never tried them myself (and I would hesitate before eating any growing in a residential area because of the stuff that could be in the soil). More info here:

Note the comment at the bottom about the hazards of eating these mushrooms with alcohol...or girlfriends!

Those are really neat. It's funky how the inky caps change so much when they go to their mature form.

Sure thing! It hasn't been that great a year for acorns so far but there are a few around. I could do seedlings too... if I can figure out the best way to get them to you. I guess they wouldn't be hurt by a couple of days in the mail.

If you want Bay trees we have a lot at work and I'm sure there are seedlings around. They are going to cut the eucalyptus trees down soon so if the baby bays aren't moved they will likely be crushed. Let me know if you want any. I can always bring them down since I need to do an LA trip anyway for many reasons.
