Sleeping dogs

square

As I have said, nothing sleeps as soundly as an old husky. Frieda's mastered the canine art of relaxation, as these photos show:

Clockwise from upper right: Frieda's spot: under the laundry room counter, next to her dog-door; outside on a cool spot on the walk; shady patch in the grass; a comfy bed, especially if she thinks she's not supposed to.

When she's really feeling relaxed and secure, she'll sprawl like few creatures can

When it's really cold or she's in a pout, she assumes the "dog-donut" position (this is a pout-- if it was cold, her tail would be over her nose). When it's really cold (or she's really put-out), she'll form an almost perfect furry torroid!

Does she have to spin around a few times before going to sleep like wild dogs do to "put down the grass".
Something so Q about sleeping animals.
I also tend to be able to sleep anytime anywhere when I want to.

She used to do the turns before sleep; now laying down is a big production (arthritis makes lying down difficult for her). I used to tell people that dogs always turn clockwise in the northern hemisphere and counter-clockwise in the southern...

I also tend to be able to sleep anytime anywhere when I want to.

Hey-- has anyone seen Wayne sleep? Does he turn around three times too?

Mine sprawls out like that but crawls across the carpet snorting up a storm while she does it. Then falls asleep in a random position. It's the most ridiculous thing.

I've seen dogs do the rubbing/snorting thing after they've had a particularly special treat! I'm told that dogs who fall asleep in random positions (especially on their backs) are able to do so because they feel totally secure and at-ease!

Mine favorite trick is wedging herself in between two people while we're watching a movie. Frequently the only way you can tell the dog is between the people is the feet sticking up.

And then she slowly expands to shove everyone of the bed...

Yay, Frieda!

I like sleepy animal donuts.

That pout and that dog donut would probably get me to do anything for the dog. I am a sucker for furry, sad-eyed animals.

Me too! Local friends are well-familiar with the way Frieda has me wrapped around her paw. The dog-pout is only ineffective when it involves her expecting me to stop a downpour so we can walk (sometimes we walk anyway) or her wanting me to kick the host's dog out of the house we were visiting (which is where this pic was taken). She ain't called "The Princess" for nothing!

That's adorable!

[Brer] Heh. I recognize most of these poses from Rio. The husky curl is especially typical of the breed. *swoon* Oh, I may be planning to delve into other breeds with my next puppy, but my heart is definitely forever lost to huskies... :)

If you ever find yourself flying through Minneapolis you should really give Alo and I a call -- especially if you have some time to kill. You really gotta meet Rio sometime. (And similarly, we need to meet Frieda one of these days.)

Huskies are the best! I have loved how they are completely domesticated, yet still exhibit wolfy behaviors and body language. Plus, they're so goofy!

I would -love- to see Rio! I'll definitely let you guys know if I'm heading that way! Maybe I'll hit a Minnicon again!

The big San Diego event just wasn't the same without you and [livejournal.com profile] kvogel there!

I was there, but disguised as a geeky fanboy...heard you were there, looked for you for dinner but couldn't find you. Need to get your cellphone sometime...
