Baby birds

Fledgelings, actually.
I noticed Frieda snuffling in one of the boxes under the carport. She had heard the cheepings and flutterings of three wren fledglings whose parents had nested in a cottage cheese box left in a cardboard box on the ground (not the safest location to raise a family, but [livejournal.com profile] martes tells me this is common for wrens). They could fly, sort-of. They would flutter a dozen feet and land awkwardly, usually on the ground. Although I was concerned about their safety, Roz assured me that if they were making short (if clumsy) flights, they'd be out of the nest for good within the day. And she was right!

A parent-bird is agitated, but remains nearby
Birds in a box
Bold explorer or cat-food?
Their nest, with un-hatched eggs
Though they could barely land on a branch, they found the side of the garage easier to land on?

All of them seemed to have survived-- they're lucky Frieda's so old (yet still keeps cats out of the yard).

At my old house in Knoxville, we had wrens insist on building a nest in the cupboards in the garage year after year. hey were surprisingly smart little things- no matter how we tried to keep them out, they would figure out ways of getting into the garage. After a while, we would have wren fledglings all over the garage, then they'd fly away. :D

Carolina Wrens?

They're excellent birds to have in your backyard. Protect them. :)
