March Update: Croods, gate-crash, Bruin-crash, night hikes, Prius-flunk
Here's an update of recent happenings...hidden under a cut to spare the uninterested...
In no particular order...
Just saw "The Croods"-- the newest Chris Sanders ("How to Train Your Dragon", etc.) film. To be honest, I did not have high expectations for this. I'm not a big fan of grunt-grunt-fart caveman humor. Calicougar said all her friends were raving about it, so I shrugged and went. I was pleasantly surprised, if a bit baffled. The story is simple and solid and the animation and characters are not as annoying as I'd expected...but the world is gorgeous. My bafflement stems from the Avatar-like world and its creatures and the goofy cavemen juxtaposition. This does work, but it is still odd. Not my favorite Sanders work, but still a nice film. Worth seeing in the theaters for the beautiful world they've created. I'd give it a $5: worth a weekday matinee admission (<--plus fewer kids). I want to make a Liyote costume.

There are several places I like to do late-night dog walks because they are safe and quiet. Towards the end of a walk on Calgrove (Valencia), I was about to dump a bag when a car came speeding down the street. What I knew and apparently the driver didn't was that this is a dead-end: there is a heavy wrought-iron gate closing it off. The speed of the car, coming over a rise, was such that I waited to hear screeching tires and possibly a small impact (we had not yet turned back onto Calgrove, so couldn't see the end of this adventure). Instead, there was a loud "KA-TANG!" and then two beats later, "KLANKITY-CLANK-KATANG". We ran around the corner to see the heavy gate gone...now lying about forty feet down the road. Coincidentally, two sheriff's cars were parked on the side road...and they sped off to investigate.
Thankfully we were off-kilter just enough to not be in any danger (where the car sped through and where the gate landed is where the dogs lay waiting for me to catch up or bring out the laser-pointer).
Earlier in the week I saw the sad ending to an uneven year for UCLA basketball. I'm no big fan of the alumni and those who expect EVERY UCLA year to be a Final Four or championship year: how the heck are those kids expected to perform when every mistake and loss is city-wide (if not national) news? I wish UCLA fans were more like some of the big teams-- where the coach and the team are fanatically supported. The only good thing about the NCAA game was watching it with a fellow fan and close friend. Misery loves company...

Also, Fuzzy has the oddest cat:

She bears a spooky resemblance to the Shrek cat:

Besides companionship, there was the consolation of a night-hike after the UCLA disaster. There is a trail just off their neighborhood that I'm familiar with and, with a good moon, was just what I needed.

More detailed posts on the BCR Funday, spring gardening and stuff later.
