FC 2012 Room Win!

This is the first time in thirteen years that I don't have a dealer's table at the con. As expected, I'm at loose ends with what to do without a base of operations to work from. Today was mostly off-site, though: I got to have lunch at the Apple Café with local friends (the food is -always- worth making time for!). The afternoon was shopping for some needed supplies. In the evening, I went to see Cirque du Soleil's IMMORTAL show (the Michael Jackson-themed one) at the HP Pavillion just down the street. CdS was very nice-- not as "big" and creature-costume-y as some of their shows (it is travelling after all), but very snazzy. They had the brightest electro-luminescent wire I've ever seen! (<--check it out, Sionna! I want to know what they used!!)

One of the downsides to no dealer's table: I totally forgot to buy a membership and was reminded how LONG the reg lines are. I got so used to the dealers room staff and the incredible organization and convenience the provide for the dealers. At the same time I don't miss the schlepping of stuff and setting up of the table!

Schadenfreude for Roz: I saw Steve M. get booted from the table he'd set up at in the hallway outside the dealer's room. I'm guessing he was told to go register or be booted (he didn't even have a membership!) because I watched as he marched right up to the front of the long line for registration, where he had an animated argument with the registration director (all clearly seen through the glass, by their gestures); saw Steve try to go-in-the-out-door; saw same director explain to him (with more obvious gestures) how to get to the end of the long line; saw him re-explain to Steve why he couldn't go backwards through the crowded hallway, that Steve had to go around to the back of the line; saw Steve finally frump to the door and the end of the line. It was like a silent comedy film. I guess the con staff has had it with Steve's ghosting the con and stealing space to sell his work.

On the other hand, I totally scored on my room: for some reason, they gave me an executive suite. I'm on the third floor (easy access to the con areas just a flight down) and two rooms that are bigger than any room I've had in recent memory (the bathroom is bigger than most of the rooms here). There's also a great view down Market Street and San Carlos blvd. So of course I have no giant monster suit to build/finish/make use of the easy con-access. Nor do I have a roommate. As if I needed more incentive to never leave my room (getting out and into the con is a huge accomplishment for me, who would prefer to sit in his dank cave and watch bad television). If I could instantly transport materials and equipment here, I'd just stay in this room and build. There's even an empty refrigerator and two tv's.

I'm still baffled as to why I got this, but I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth.

Tomorrow: actually getting out and seeing the con!

Do try and get out to have SOME fun! I'd hate to think you spent that much time and money to sit in your lonely (albeit swanky) hotel room!

We'll have to find you at some point.

Build in your room? The TechShop (with a Juki industrial single-needle machine, serger and, wait for it, a unison feed machine) is 2 blocks away.

Yes! I saw! I'm a life-time member of TechShop!

LOL I wonder if that is the Steve M. that I know :)

Your room may be awesome but you are there to see and enjoy the con....get out there and do it! LOL!

Wow another cool SM story :)

I do know though that I LOVE LOVE LOVE the badge that he drew for me...even though it took years for him to get it...it is just wonderful and everybody likes it...

I still remember the year I was next to Steve at Midwest Furfest: declaiming to Mark that no one buys fanzines any more (while I was unpacking and Steve hadn't realized Mark was with us), then spending the con griping about how no one was buying anything. I took more pleasure than I should have out of the glare I got from him near the end of the con when I told Michael to go buy more stuff because the Samsonite we had packed our inventory in was going to be mostly empty.

He does a good, entertaining frump...

Steve is like a real-life Mr. Bean. Seriously.

Awesome Summary and Observations :D ... Was very nice chatting with you!... As usual I feel guilty sidetracking you at 'con' ... thus as we discussed, will return to trying after con, wherein the guilt is less prevalent :D

Dangit, I was only able to talk to you for, like, two minute! Definitely will try to get in-sync with you now that we're post-con.

SCORE on the room!

We totally lucked out last year, and wound up paying for a nicey room this year; totally worth it.

And now that you mention it, I don't think I ever saw you at all! Eric came by, handled by Huggie and we clowned around for a bit. Of course Cuddles and Terraluna came by as well.

The lights on the costumes look like they may be LED instead of EL because they are BRIGHT!

I saw your booth, but you were out prowling: you've done a great job with Bunnywarez! Really cute designs!

I did see Eric walking around in The Creature. Was good to see him again, same for Cuddles and Terraluna.

I think you're right-- on some of the big pics, you can see vague, individual dots.

It was great meeting you/chatting your ears off at FC! And thank you (!!) for once again sharing your wealth of brainy knowledge at your panels, it's great to get a chance to touch and see nifty new arty tools and the stuff you make with them!

FYI we've got some great furry-related incriminating shots from the Guild shoot if you should ever need blackmail/leverage material, muaha. :)

That was the best night of the con! I have missed long, rambling chats at recent U.S. conventions. That's one of the things I love about Eurofurence: a lot more relaxed socialization and less frantic running around. Still agog at meeting your Viral (in the YouTube sense) husband!

The Guild stuff was a lot of fun: I was really happy to hear they really are a good group of folks. I'd love to see the pics sometime!
