Cutest Costumes at FC 2011

FC 2011 was particularly fun this year. I'm not really sure what, specifically, made it so enjoyable, but partly this was because there was a good balance between socializing, work (panels) and table-sitting. Plus, I was able to get together with a number of people that at other cons I only see in passing. Many nice meals, lots of terrific conversations. Plus, Hyena henchmen all weekend!

The collage above are what I think were the cutest costumes at the con. The springer was my favorite last year (edit: worn by "Feast of Dreams"-- hi, Katie! and built by Mixed Candy!); the trio of cat, dog and husky were *really* cute! (dog and husky made by "Feast of Dreams"; cat by Temperance); I loved the fierce little hyena girl.

There were also a number of new costumes at the con that were both spectacular and well-performed. The hawk's wings were very effective; I loved the Qarrezel gnoll-demon; faithful henchmen get a plug; the husky on the right impressed me with his ice skating skilz and mad dancing.

Great Costumes

There were also some spectacular new costumes: the neon-birds-of-prey rocked my world. Not sure who did them, but-- Wow! Great to look at in full light and amazing in the dark! I loved the big springer spaniel adventurer/detective! Great personality both in design and acting: he was my favorite new costume of the con this year! I also enjoyed the Dr. Borrible-esque canine: I forget their name, but the design was both unique and extremely personable-- and the costume worked perfectly with the head! (<--best partial at the con!).

My Favorites
My Favorites!

My panels went particularly well this year. Partly this is from having done them several times, partly because I was better prepared. I did one on "Advanced Head Design" that focused on how, exactly, to translate a 2-dimensional design into a 3-dimensional head. the other panel was the "Exotic Materials and How Not to Kill Yourself" panel. I got extremely positive feedback on these! This made me very happy.

The move to the convention center next year does not make me happy, but we'll see. All in all, possibly the best FC I've ever been to!

I. LOVED. That Java hound dog/spaniel. Seriously it was one of my favorites and I am very sad I couldn't get a photo with him. Damn you fursuit parade for not "really" going through the dealer's room! I'm not sure why the eyes on Java suits are always angry though, I love her style, just not so keen on the angry eyes.

Java is a fierce creature! I guess she could always make a second set of "happy eyes" that could be laid-on. I had a costume that I did that with since it was mostly the eyelid placement that gave it different looks. Still, I like the intense look. There are plenty of poofy costumes out there.

oh man you have no idea how badly I wanted to make Winston giddy and sweet lookin, I spent lots of time looking at him sans eyelids, but the concept called for aloof and better-than-thou, so here he is!
I think it's an aesthetic thing re: angry eyes, I like them, and it's something I've been trying to get the hang of. It also comes from subconscious influence from a fursuit one of my roommates has, certain traits of fursuits I see all the time rub off on me. This year I'm going to do lots of experimenting with different facial expressions in my costumes, and I can't wait to see where they go... :]

LOL. Giddy and sweet would have been fun too. Mahrkale cracked me up when she texted me and said "I want to hug him, but I don't know if he'll let me." ;)

Angry eyes are actually pretty common when it comes sports mascots. It gives a lot of character, along with a confident look. Java actually toned the angry down quiet a bit for the character here, since he's not really an angry character, but aloof/stuck-up.

My character Roby is my friendly/bouncy side, so he's got the goofy grin going. I wanted this character to be different from that.
