Sorry to hear that-- If you do go, it's a pretty amazing convention. Remember those stories you heard about European sf cons? Same phenomenon with EF: friendly, intelligent. polite and fun group. The puppet show is amazing.

When I couldn't go last year due to a number of financial missteps, I started saving immediately and continue to see a few things just to make sure I have a solid fund. Plus, thanks to Greece, the dollar may be just a bit stronger this year!

Oh! MeMeMeMeMe!

I got number 764 - single room, stay the extra night on Sunday - but no plans yet for actual entry or departure from the country.

I took the train into Suhl this summer, handing out UPRR cloisonne pins to helpful DB employees - and it paid off when departing Suhl, I got to ride in the cab with the engineer! Took a different rout leaving than arriving, track went through several small villages in the Thuringen Forest, which were not on any of my maps, and which looked like they connected with the outside world _only_ by hiking a forest trail, or by the train - which might have been interesting to spend an extra week trekking through, if I knew any german to speak of (er...so to speak).

I'm membership #887! Also staying the extra night...and that's about as far as I've got planned as well. I'm torn between big-city Berlin and quaint, fairy-tale villages. Or just coming back directly...I've got to do more research. The local area has some history (cathedral, famous and/or controversial saints, etc.).
