Huntington Dog Beach Again!

Here's the flickr set

A teacher friend of mine wanted to give her dogs one last big dog-day before school started. She'd heard of R0ndo and Apache's romp at the beach-- so we took Monday off and travelled on down.

The surf was MUCH rougher today than the last time (almost flat) and Apache DID NOT LIKE! She spent the entire beach-time hiding under a rock. Literally.

The other dogs had their usual spaz-time.

In order to console Apache, we checked out the Huntington Beach Dog Park. Very nice-- lots of bark (haha) ground cover and shade. Apache was MUCH happier and became her usual happy self.

We also ate at two dog-friendly cafes: "Alice's Breakfast at the Park" (fantastic cinnamon rolls!) and "The Lazy Dog Cafe". The latter is a dog-themed (decoration-wise) restaurant in the style of a BJ's Brewery. The upside: you can have your dogs with you on the patio. Every table there had at least one dog (we had four). They have dog-eats as well.

Huntington Beach is easily the most dog-friendly city I've ever been to (besides Vancouver). Technically they have the same laws as Los Angeles-- but they interpret them differently. Very differently: in L.A. you can't even have a dog on a restaurant patio and never off-leash (the beach stipulates dogs must be "under the owner's control"). Plus, fantastic weather and a beautiful neighborhood. Love it.

Oh, those pics are really adorable. Aww, Apache under a rock!

I have no idea how she squeezed herself into that nook. But it was better than the little pocket nearby that she stuck her head into hiding from the surf!

So cuuute!
Hmm- what's the fire/haze situation at Huntington Beach? Is it bad there, too, or do the ocean winds help blow it away- or is it far from the current fire and not affected anyway?

Huntington Beach was gorgeous. One of the reasons the firefighters are starting to win the battle against the multiple fires down here is because of the moist, on-shore flow. The areas inland were too smokey to see, but the beach was clear and clean. The air humid and salty!

If there were Santa Anna winds blowing, just the opposite: hot, dry winds that would be wreaking havoc on the fires and coating the beaches with ash.

Santa Ana winds sound bad. :P I was wondering because if I DID think about moving to the LA area, the frequent fires are a concern: every time we've had smoke from LA drift all the way out here to Kingman I've gotten severely sick (and my Mom's asthma has gotten horrible- in fact the southern CA fires of late '07 are what triggered the onset of her severe adult asthma to begin with). :P I'm not sure I'd do well in a place that fires burned around me every summer. So, I'm wondering if there's an area someone like me could live out there and not be deathly ill every summer.

There isn't a (large) city in the U.S. that won't have something that'll affect you badly. 95% of the time it's a non-issue; even smog is -almost- a thing of the past in SoCal.

Santa Anna winds aren't so bad. They can result in high temps and dry days, but they come and go. It's kind of neat to have them in the middle of winter, when we get short-sleeve weather for a week or so.

You could move to one of the beach cities: they get a lot of gloom year-round, but they tend to have low air pollution issues and not much in the way of smoke.

When I stayed in CO, the town was really dog-friendly. There were dogs just loose that stayed in some of the shops. Ironically though, the house we were renting didn't allow them so Banjo had to stay home :(

The Rondo montage is adorable!

For some reason, R0ndo was just REALLY HAPPY to be there. He hadn't even gotten any food yet-- I'd just gotten him from the car. I loved his bright-eyed, doofy face: happy-happy-happy-happy-happy-BWUH?!!

I love Vancouver. Very clean, beautiful city. Also the most dog-friendly one I've ever been to! That's why I had to say that HB is the dog-friendliest US city!
