Dog breeds, weather, blah
Apr. 27th, 2009 09:53 amFirst of all, I'm disappointed! No one figured out the breed of the big, furry, black dog correctly! Here's the answer:

Of course, I got it wrong, too. I would have bet good coin that this was a Bouvier-- my friend has one who looks and acts just like these dogs, even to having the natural cut (no weird beard and no cropped ears like the "show" Bouvs). I had little familiarity with the BRT-- and I'm now told that they're enjoying a tremendous popularity. I still have no way of distinguishing the two breeds (BRT's and BdF's). This has the same feel as the odd spike in popularity that the Kuvasz is seeing, at least in the Seattle area. Ironically, the Bouvier breed club was absent from the Pet Expo.
Weather: This has to be the oddest weather pattern I've experienced in Los Angeles. Regular amounts of rain early, then these extremes of chilly days and record-breaking heat. The plants have no idea what to do: I have seen trees in full leaf and flower, while others (of the same species) are -just- starting to get leaves out. The dogs are shedding in confused flares: they'll start to blow their coat, then it gets cold and they stop...then it gets hot and poof-- their goes another chunk of coat. The other week (during the Pet Expo, of course) the weather was roasting-hot. Today? I'll be surprised if it gets out of the 60's! If it's going to be this cloudy and cold, at least it could rain!
Got the hillside brush cleared (thanks again, Tori!!). Dogs are looking more like porcupines with all the foxtails they're picking up. Lost my cellphone...very bad. I tore the house apart looking for it; eventually I figure out that I lost it in the dry riverbed we walked in the day before. Thank goodness for
martes and her cellphone: we re-traced our walk and I kept dialing my number (did I mention my own battery was very low? Great.). Finally-- Huzzah! I hear Roz's voice answering, "Found it!" I felt like Mr. Watson hearing Alexander Graham Bell’s voice! Finding my phone turned a bad day better. Waffles and bacon for dinner made that bad day even better!
Otherwise, things are plodding along. My current work consists of a lot of paperwork, and on a project dubbed, "Make a Bunch of Stuff Only Using Materials I Have On Hand". I did cheat once, but so far so good!

Date: 2009-04-27 07:00 pm (UTC)A lot of times in handling class we switch off dogs, and I got to show a Bouvier a few times. They are a LOT of dog!
I've also gotten to run a Saluki, a couple different Std. Poodles, a Great Dane (OMG, it's like a pony), and at the other end of the spectrum a Papillion and a number of American Eskimo Dogs (the instructor's breed).
I've been told several times now that I have a knack with handling the little dogs, but I just can't see myself owning anything smaller than a Corgi...
