We Lost

The main thing on my mind for this year's SDCC* was the masquerade: Lynette and I were going to enter our "We Lost" skit that debut'd at CostumeCon in San Jose earlier this year. I was very excited at the prospect: ComiCon was a great venue for the broad humor of this skit. Also, they have a larger stage that I might not fall off of.

For those that missed it the first time, the skit is about a wargrider and his warg after The War For The Ring (Tolkien's "Return of the King").

[MC reads]
“After the Great War for the Ring,
Not everyone marries an Elf Princess;
Not everyone goes to the Grey Havens;
Not everyone goes home heroes…”

[Description]
Orc is sad...sitting on rock. They lost.
His faithful-but-doofy warg comes galumping in, oblivious to the Great And Disgraceful Defeat his master is moody over.
Warg tries to get his rider to play-- tossing a "ball" at the orc's feet.
No go.
Warg sits, sighs.
Orc thinks about it...shrugs. Picks up "ball" and tosses it for his warg, who goes galloping off after it. Orc walks off-- a little happier.

(You can tell the defeat was disgraceful because all the arrows sticking in both warg and orc are in their backs...not an injury usually received charging -in- for an attack. Run away!)

Yeowch!

I was thrilled that the skit went well: between limited vision and general awkwardness, there's a LOT that could have gone wrong. Fortunately, we kept the skit simple and timed it off of my movements, meaning a lot less pressure on me to hit timed cues.

Lynette did a fantastic job on her orc...I'd originally told her all she'd have to do is a basic oatmeal-and-latex mask and some potato sacks for clothes. True to her passion for doing everything well, she totally blew me away with her "quickie" orc costume. Guh. That's why I'm still her student.

Mortimer was based on designs by Jen Seng! Here's a pic showing my crappy maquette in front of Jen's artwork.

By the end of the evening, I was sore and spent. But happy. Very happy!

We Won!
Mortimer survives the Great Battle, but has a heart attack at the awards ceremony...

Martin Jaquish and his crew ran a great masquerade! All-told, the ComiCon International masquerade is the best-run masquerade in fandom from the aspect of preparation, lighting direction, MC's (Phil and Kaja did a fantastic job hosting-- particularly keeping a rowdy crowd under control), stage (wide, with BIG STEPS), terrific video coverage. If I had -any- complaint: no salty-snacks in the costumer rooms! Thanks to moo-chans and [livejournal.com profile] burmecian_storm for the photos!

HUGE THANKS go out to [livejournal.com profile] waynekaa and moo-chans for wrangling me and Lynette all evening! Wayne and moo-chans worked harder than we did all evening-- toting wargs, making sure neither of us passed out, stage ninja-ing and non-stop fanning to keep -me- from passing out. HUGE WORKS! You guys were FANTASTIC!!!

If you are interested in some "making-of" stuff, here's my post on Fursuit: Making Mortimer

*Yes, I know-- ComiCon International/CCI, but it'll always be SDCC in my world.

I loved that skit SO much, and I never even played WoW! The characterization was just as amazing as the costumes, and Lynette's orc was incredible. Normally I would ignore the humanoid next to the big impressive dog, but you both were so amazing and complimented each other so well.
