Ever since I missed seeing this play when I was last in London (for RBW 2007), I've obsessed about seeing it. When I discovered that a revival of the show over-lapped with my trip to Magdeburg this year, I immediately changed my plans and made arrangements to see the show on this trip.

Warhorse is based on the young adult book of the same name. The story follows a boy and his horse and their experiences when the horse is "volunteered" for service to England in the first World War. The play captures the exuberation and heart-wrenching drama of the book in ways that are difficult to describe. The horse puppets are masterworks and the puppeteers bring them to life with such spirit that they are real horses from the first tentative step of the young foal to the last breath on a smoke-filled battlefield.
Karen and I were speechless. This is one of those shows that-- after the applause finally dies away-- you continue to ring with the emotions that the performance filled you with.
We were -very- lucky to be allowed a back-stage viewing of the puppets. They even allowed us to take photos and ask many questions. People talk about evenings that one never forgets: I'd have to count this as one of those. My thanks to Karen and to the folks at the production that were so kind and patient with us.
