The Frankfurt Photoset on Flickr

On Monday we made it back to Frankfurt and to our hotel...almost. I got the name wrong: I thought it was the "Hotel Am Zoo" and in fact it was the "Alexander Am Zoo". Another short cab ride and we unloaded and passed out for a little while. By the way, the "Hotel Am Zoo" seemed very nice as well-- and was right in front of the Frankfurt Zoo. I would like to stay there next time: the Alexander was very nice, but the Hotel Am Zoo looked interesting (right near the head of the shopping street, too).

Steve and I roused ourselves and wandered into town. This hotel is right next to the zoo as well, but located on a quieter street near the rear entrance to the zoo. On the way into town, we ate at "Doi-Doi" which sounds like mockery word used by kids but is actually Mediterranean fare. The food was nice enough that this became our default eatery.

The street (whose name I forget...Konstablerwache?) is a pedestrian street with shops all along it. This is where we found post offices, Deutsche Banks [free ATM for BofA customers] and even a huge hobby/craft/electronic store! There are music stores, theaters and tsotchke shops both along this street and on the side streets in this district. There was even a church with a biergarten! Bwa!

On our way to find a pet store, Steve noticed a *comic* shop! Lots of European books as well as a number of American comics. I even found a copy of a "Bravestar" comic (featuring his horse, Thirty-thirty). Now I just need to remember who -really- liked 30-30 and get it to them (someone mentioned this in LJ a long while back...I just can't remember -who- it was).

I found one thing that I really had to think a dozen times about before deciding it was just too much: a Meissen figurine of a tiny dog running with a carrot in his mouth. Unfortunately, it was about E121, making it a -very- expensive porcelain doodle. I still regret not getting it, tho'. I mean-- it was a tiny border-collie-looking dog, dashing around holding a carrot in her mouth . I guess it reminded me of something Apache would (has) done. With her it was newly potted plants, though.

Oh, and I coveted a blue German shepherd statue...but we were already at the limits of our baggage allotment.

I have to say that Frankfurt turned out to be a much nicer and more interesting city than I expected. Good people, good food, stuff to see. More details on my Flickr page...I annotated the photos for those intersted in more nattering.

Tuesday would be the Zoo!
