SDCC 2008 Photo Essay

If you prefer a photo-report over text-y stuff, my annotated photos of the 2008 San Diego ComiCon can be found HERE. (Text version up soonish.)

Damn. I so so so so want to go one of these days!!!!!!

So? What's stopping you! Come on out one year! You can visit with friends before or after, then take the train down (the train is great!).

[identity profile] spunkywulf.livejournal.com 2008-07-29 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Mostly expenses is all. Not only the plane tickets and stuff, but I heard Comic Con is super expensive? Cost is primarily the only thing stopping me, otherwise I'd be all over it! I want to go so bad, and visit you all, as well naturally :D

[identity profile] furtech.livejournal.com 2008-07-29 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Plane tickets are a pain these days (fuel prices, extra charges for baggage, peanuts, etc.), but you can still find decent fares if you book in advance (especially from Jet Blue and Southwest Air).

Hotel: we stay at the Holiday Inn and for just two people, it works out to about $85/night/person. If you get a couple more people in the room, that rate goes down proportionately.

Memberships: when they open pro-reg in March 2009, sign up. You should be able to pull together enough material to qualify (maybe you can get some mileage out of your Boondocks work after all!). Pro-badge = free. Plus, you get a "guest-of" badge, too.

Where SDCC gets expensive is if you go on a crazy-brained shopping spree. Rare drawing books, foreign editions, original art by someone you worship as a GOD-- that sort of thing. If you're really on a budget, you can do what Roz does and bring/get a cooler with cold cuts, PB&J, bread and cereal to survive the weekend and not go out to eat.

Some great shots! Thank for sharing.

The photos were great. I've never been to one of those and would be completely out of my realmif I did, but I still think it would be fun. Oh, and that armor thing; You really didn't know where it was from? That's the bad dude in Iron Man. And for that photo with the comment for Komamura, saying you got a kick out of his reaction... I was wondering something. It is someone else's now or did you always own it? I wondered this cause of you saying that that he/she *shrugs* had a reaction to you being there. (if I read that right) :) Still.. Very nice.

[identity profile] furtech.livejournal.com 2008-07-29 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Oops...my naive is showing. Haven't seen Iron Man yet-- I missed the group outing and it takes much for me to overcome massive apathy and go to the movies on my own. I should have known-- a closer look and the design similarities become clear.

I knew you'd like 'em! Stuart Ng Books (http://www.stuartngbooks.com/importsyyy.html) also had a cute book about a fennec fox that I got for Steve.

Awesomeness! Someday I'd like to go, but I'm not really sure that I'm up to dealing with the madhouse.

I love ponies. :)

The only downside to entering the masquerade is that you pretty much lose your Saturday (meetings, rehearsals, last-minute-fixes, etc.). It's still one of the premier masquerades these days. I'd rate the top three masquerades as SDCC (lots of SPFX guys enter), CostumeCon (pure quality of competition) and DragonCon (sheer size, from what I hear-- I haven't been to one in several years). After that, maybe Otakon and Worldcon. AX has been crippled by its move to the LA convention center...remains to be seen if they regain their prominence.

The dealer's room is worth a look...just leave your credit card at the hotel. It's the ultimate geek-mall/fleamarket!

Love the photos, I REALLY miss that con even with the crowds. Just such magic you find in odd little spaces there.

Yeah-- it's the hidden treasures you find in the small booths-- sometimes that's the -only- time you ever see them! At least the crowds are less if you stick to either end of the center (small press and artist's alley).

Dang, I so wish I was in LA for this... Maybe next year. Darned apartment... w00t for KomaKoma! Seems like you had fun

[identity profile] furtech.livejournal.com 2008-07-29 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It was great being given the opportunity to show the creator of Bleach how much he's inspired me. I had a blast!

[identity profile] c-eagle.livejournal.com 2008-07-29 12:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you locate desertcoyote? I'm beginning to think I'll never see 'em in RL ,... eeep!
Hope ya had a terrific convention!

[identity profile] furtech.livejournal.com 2008-07-29 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Since she was rooming with me, yeah-- we finally connected (she had my key...)

Next year, if she comes out again, we'll definitely have to schedule a meal or outing in advance. I know she really wanted to get to the ocean wildlife area, but didn't have the time this year (or couldn't find anyone with a car that had time).

[identity profile] c-eagle.livejournal.com 2008-07-30 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
oh.. gotcha!... Sorry ta hear the wildlife zones didn't fit in the schedule... yep, I had a car, but just the two seater this year..!

[identity profile] furtech.livejournal.com 2008-07-30 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
Two-seater would have been fine: I didn't have time to go off-convention (and I rarely do-- once I'm at a con, that's where I stick to). I'll definitely remember to suggest you next year if she comes out (and allows enough time to do a side trip-- honestly I don't think she had the time as it was).

Looks like you had blast.
Nice to see the fox in action :)

SDCC is overwhelming, but almost always fun. The crowds can be a bit much, but they hire plenty of professional crowd control, so it works.
