Paths not taken...
Dec. 31st, 2005 01:02 pm[I needed some post to push those tastey, but un-attractive mushrooms off the top of my LJ...]

The other day at the dogpark, I ran into someone who I'd never expected to see again: Lady! She was the other dog at Border Collie Rescue that I nearly adopted. When Rondo (a very dark horse in the standings) turned up, I had to agonize over which dog to adopt. I worried less about getting the right dog (they were all wonderful) than about what kind of owner the other dog would end up with.
Lady was sweet, but very shy and fearful of strangers, especially men. Like Rondo, she would growl and bark at anyone she didn't know very well. But she was *adorable*! She was a tiny (30lbs) female b&w-- exactly what I wanted. And she had freckled white socks! She warmed up to me (I'm good at that), but would still require a lot of socialization. I eventually chose Rondo because his sense of humor was very similar to my own; we seemed to be on the same page personality-wise. I was lucky because I couldn't make a wrong choice, but I wondered who the person who adopted Lady was like.
I needn't have worried: her owner is a wonder pair of British (New Zealand?) ex-pats who've owned BC's in the past. It apparently took Lady over two weeks to get used to the husband (who really adored her), but now she really loves him.
Rondo and she played happily, with Lady really owning him.
