Today was a hike with [livejournal.com profile] redstorm and [livejournal.com profile] marrok and their new puppy, Destiny. The usual locals were also there: Roz and Rondo. Destiny is about the same age as Rondo and of a similar temperament-- a little shy and submissive-- but Rondo was smaller and shyer, so Destiny overwhelmed him at first. Fortunately, Rondo will warm to a dog once he finally figures out that the other dog wants to play-- not attack-- him.

I see no other dog...I disbelieve!
She's not going to kill me?
I'd better check her out...
Look! I scored a hottie!

Roz and I have been dying to see what repairs they've done to the damaged flood control steppes. We finally got a close-up peek at them. Pretty impressive: they completely repaired the walls and platform, and filled in with dirt up to the wooden support wall. We're still somewhat skeptical: they filled in the area behind the wall with dirt (not rocks) and it sure looks like this will all wash away during the first heavy rain we get.

The repaired flood control walls.

And we also got a close-up look at a power pole that we've seen during the nightwalks that looked suspiciously off-kilter. Turns out they are! And to prevent their total collapse, they attach two heavy wires to the (sandy) ground. We're pretty sure that these may well come down during the next heavy rains (right now it appears that they're mostly held up by the very wires the pole is supporting).

Rondo races to save Roz!
Destiny joins him!

All-in-all a great hike, with lunch/dinner at Islands afterwards. Destiny is a *great* dog! You guys have a Winner! And seeing her fashionably attired reminds me that I still need to get Rondo's de-rigur border collie kerchief!
