Tonys, etc.
Jun. 6th, 2005 12:41 amThe Tonys have come and gone: no huge surprises. As much as I like who won for Best Musical, I'm a bit down because once again it seems to discourage originality and "serious" musicals. I'm also VERY surprised at what -wasn't- nominated: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Pacific Overatures, Dracula, Brooklyn, The Frogs, Assassins, Little Women, Mamma Mia as well as the forgettable Good Vibrations and All Shook Up. And I have *no* idea why The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee DID get nominated.
And aside from the wacky concept, apparently Jonestown: The Musical was deservedly ignored.
From it all, the only thing that Elayne and I came away with was that if Hugh Jackman is ever in another show, we're on the next Jet Blue flight out of Burbank to see him! He has the same kind of disarming charisma that Bernadette Peters has: they can be in anything and make the role sparkle. Hugh's number showcasing a number of famous Broadway ditties convinced me of that!
