We all change. There was a time when I would declare, “I am a science fiction fan and reader!” Over time, that has changed in subtle, but distinct ways:

I am a science fiction fan and reader!
I am a science fiction fan and comic publisher!
I am a comic publisher and filmmaker!
I am a filmmaker and Siberian owner!
I am a Siberian owner and anthro-fan!
I am a dog owner and costumer!

See?

At various points in your lives, what would have been YOUR declarations?

For a long time it was "I am a bookworm."

Then I thought it was "clever" to say "I am a bookwyrm" when I started identifying as a dragon. (It was my first year in college. I was a little weird back then. Still am a little weird, come to think of it.)

Then it was "I am a furry" for a while, when I realized that it was fun to have characters other than dragons.

And then of course I found fursuiting, discovered that sewing is not evil, and now it's "I am a furry and costumer."

my interests seem to be cumulative; new ones get afdded on top but the old ones remain.

I guess the approximate order would be;

I am a Science fiction reader, comic fan, anime fan, cosplayer, fursuiter. the different levels wax and wane, but none of them have QUITE petered out yet.

*points to your icon* I am not, not have I ever been, a Durian eater.

Doesn't mean I'm not open to try one, though :)

Its really interesting when you think about that question.

I think I went through interesting spouts.

I used to just call myself a cartoon lover then I attended an anime convention and I was an anime lover.
Then I got into the whole cosplaying thing and I was a cosplayer.
But now I got into making fur suits and I love it and I found out I love furrys and the people in the community.

I will always love my cartoons and sci fi stuff though but I love furrys.

... hmm.. I tried several times to make a list like you did.. but I just can't do it.
What I am hasn't always followed a logical course.. and I've never in my life really stood up and tried to define myself... I'm just me :)

Same here: it's rare that I completely give up something-- but the top two interests/focuses have changed for me over the years. A lot of these are also overlapping for me-- cosplay, anime, anthro, science fiction, etc. can be subsets of either fannish activity (going to conventions or what I do for fun) or even of "costuming".

Could be that when I get into something I love the steep part of the learning curve and that's what I spend the most time on.

...or you could just say, "I'm ADD!" (kidding!)

That's the problem most interesting people have: a widening range of interests but a fixed and finite amount of time in the day.

I've had a durian milkshake: was very good-- like a cross between a peach and a banana. That milkshake -did- have a faint rotten poo smell, tho'.

It's like the rings in a tree: your roots are still there and are the basis of what you're into now.

I've got a disorganized mind, so labels help me keep track of stuff. They're not necessarily "definitive" so much as mnemonics to distinguish stuff from each other. The declarations above represent periods of time in my life and interests (and in some ways reveal how I get to different interests).

You've got a more scientifically-oriented brain (probably great for your day job!) and may not need the kind of mental post-its that I need. Or I just have too much free time right now!

I've been thinking about this one myself.

One of the major thing I've decided is that I can't really separate my different areas of fanac, and it makes more sense for me to look at my fanac in terms of what I do instead of what I read or watch.

Gee,.. lots of things have changed over time for me :P

However, speaking of iterests as they have changed ... but mostly just added- and typically on a rotation of 2 to 3 months per hobby (Means I know a little a bout a lot and am proficient at absolutly NOTHING):

Model trains (the small stuff)
Add electronics
Add Wolves and Foxes
Add Amateur Radio
Add Sci-Fi
Add Artwork (drawing)
Add Metal Working
Add Model Trains (The BIG stuff)
Add Costuming

What would I 'declare' though? Only the following:

I am a person ever hopeful that somehow, someday, I might succeed to make something of myself.

I think I'm just ADD. Long list of interests, short list of accomplishments. Also I still must bug you to see your film(s). I'm just quite curious to see what you came up with.

As for the fixed amount of time in the day in the earlier comment, I'm waiting on the invention of the 26 hour day. Those extra two would make a big difference I think. *grin* I might actually get something done.
