Dr. Dolittle

Short break from trip blathering...

pushpull

Tonight we saw the stage musical version of "Dr. Dolittle" at the Pantages. Billed as family fare I didn't expect Les Mis (coming back this summer! Woo!) and was hoping it would be more sophisticated than Nemo on Ice. That's pretty much what we got: most of the same music as the feature film with a combination of bunraku puppets (ala Lion King) and a few full-body puppets and large props. Tommy Tune was his hammy, marvelous self and the female lead (Dee Hoty) was extraordinary: I could see her as the lead in any Sondheim show or something like Sunset Blvd.. And the Pushmi-Pullyu was pretty cute.

Not sure if this wouldn't be improved by putting the whole show on ice, but it was good to see Tune dancing again.

And at least this summer we have Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Les Mis to look forward to.

Please keep me updated on Les Mis information? I would love to see it again.

Pantages, June 20-July 2 (I think). Short run, but always worth seeing!

A Pushmi-Pullyu on ice would be fun to see.

I got to see The Wizard of Oz at the Orpheum Theatre here in san Francisco a few years back. Eartha Kitt was the wicked witch and Mickey Rooney was the Wizard. it was the first time I have seen a stage play, so I was pretty objective about it.

I was not pleased. It was a mess. The spinning house in the tornado scene was overshadowed by the block and tackle three times it size. Mickey and Eartha are old and tired. Damn.

More recently I saw Monsters Inc. on Ice. This was also the very first "on ice" show I saw and again I was objective about it.

It was freakin' awesome! The costumes were brilliant AND they were ice skating in them. Holy WOW!
