Donut Prince!

donutprince

My apple diaries gave a friend a craving for apple fritters. She is a top-tier foodie: she even takes pictures of her food -before- she eats it. Her research pointed her to a small shop in Burbank, Donut Prince. Both of us were still riding a creative high from a conference we'd attended the previous day. So we celebrated. A lot.

The first thing I noticed was that I had driven past this place a hundred times or more in the past! This is the donut shop in the same shopping center where I bought my pin-head crickets at Scales-N-Tails (when I owned poison dart frogs).

After a nice meal at Zen Cow (aka, Zankou Chicken), we indulged in peanut-butter-filled chocolate bars, apple fritters and my two favorites: a Homer Simpson pink donut and a white-with-black-sprinkles cake. OMGAMAZING!

I love this place. I have an adoration for people who are thorough and passionate about what they create. It is clear from the apple fritter alone that the owner (an Asian immigrant) is one of those people who is determined to Get It Right. I can picture her buying this donut shop and then researching the hell out of what a "donut" is. What is this strange thing Americans like so much? And then taking it a step further by making the absolute BEST donut in the world. The apples were minced perfectly-- not too big, not too small. The seasoning was even and throughout the dough. Not too sweet, not too bland. The glaze kept the outside crisp, the inside moist and fluffy. I'm not a big fan of apple fritters, but this experience could change me!

Ahhh - the place on Olive, sort of behind the McDonald's?

Yeah, that was my favorite donut shop, as well.

I miss that. And Ribs USA (which had become too expensive by the time I moved out of town), and Santoro's Subs, and Chili John's, both up on Burbank Blvd.

Havw you been to the new LASFS clubhouse over in Van Nuys yet? I miss the lemons from the lemon tree...

I adore properly made apple fritters... and I haven't come across one in years! I'll have to give that place a try.

Aw, man... I miss donuts so much. It's one of the things I miss most (being allergic to wheat (and thus regular flour))- maybe the thing I miss THE most that I haven't been able to find a good substitute for (well, donuts and baclavas, actually). (Though my waistline doesn't miss them! :D).... For awhile, a store here carried a gluten-free glazed donut I could eat but it appears to have stopped being produced. I remember apple fritters were very good. Heh- let me know when Donut Prince starts a gluten/wheat-free line and I'll come right on over! :9

Several years ago, ALL the donut shops around here were owned by Asians. One in particular served these amazing fritters like this. It was unfortunate they couldn't make a decent cup of coffee to save their business. They closed down about 3 years ago.

Well I'm glad she doesn't take pictures of her food AFTER she eats it!

Thinking of the immigrants buying businesses, did you get a chance to eat at any of the diners in CT that had the 6-8 page menus? They're all Greek diners. So there's a full Greek menu hidden under all the american favorites. and I do mean ALL. you've got all the standard diner food, plus usually a full deli (often kosher), plus a full italian menu! Generally all of it is good, from the meatloaf to the pizza to the spanikopita. and generally open 24 hours and the food is still good at 2AM. MAGIC.

I am amused by the signs advertising TROPICAL FISH and SUSHI.

I want to be a donut prince when I grow up.

Also I never knew you owned poison dart frogs.
